President Joe Biden indicated Wednesday that he is preparing to make his first trip to the southern border as president, amid an ongoing immigration crisis and a battle over the fate of Title 42.

‘That is my intention, we are working on the details now’, Biden told reporters during a trip to Kentucky on Wednesday.

His comment followed a report in the Wall Street Journal that he was ‘seriously considering’ a trip there.

Biden fielded questions during his first two years in office about why he hadn’t made a border visit. Her comment came a day after White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said “misinformation” about immigration could help people traffickers.

It is a politically treacherous move. Vice President Kamala Harris took blows when she told migrants on a trip to Guatemala “don’t come” to the US. She then took issue when she said the border was “safe” last year when migrant arrests exceeded the 2 millions.

The Trump-era Title 42 authority, used to return immigrants citing the COVID pandemic, was set to expire before Christmas, then was extended after Chief Justice John Roberts issued a stay of a ruling by a lower court. The Supreme Court ruled after Christmas that the authority will be held indefinitely and the case will be heard next month.

So far, Biden’s only itinerary is to visit Mexico City, where he will meet President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and Canadian President Justin Trudeau at the restarted ‘three amigos’ summit.

Immigration will surely be on the agenda, with thousands of migrants crossing the southern border every day.
