BBC Breakfast presenter Sally Nugent became visibly emotional on Tuesday while introducing the show.

The 51-year-old broadcaster held back tears and said she didn’t think she could continue her presenting duties during a poignant segment on guide dogs.

Sally and her co-star Jon Kay, who were joined on the show by some furry friends, raised awareness amid the current shortage of volunteer guide dogs.

After the video played, the cameras returned to show the presenters in the studio. Sally was overcome with emotion as she put her hands to her face and sighed ‘wow’, while Jon asked her if she was okay.

Sally jokingly replied, ‘No. I don’t think she can continue. However, what an amazing thing to be able to work with a dog like that and then take it to the next stage of your work.”

Jon said: “I’m surprised there’s a shortage, I would have thought there would be people lining up around the block, but I guess that’s quite a commitment, isn’t it?”

Sally was announced as a permanent presenter on the morning news show in October 2021, replacing Louise Minchin.

It has been filling in for regular BBC Breakfast hosts independently since November 2011 and also presents their sports bulletins.

Sally said at the time: “I am absolutely thrilled to become the new BBC Breakfast presenter and bring the latest news, top entertainment guests and stories that matter to the nation every week.”
