In November, Sportsmail reported that Barcelona president Joan Laporta was trying to convince La Liga to be more flexible with its FFP rules after admitting that his club could not make any transfers in January.

The Catalan giants spent more than £130m to upgrade Xavi’s squad over the summer, which included the arrival of Robert Lewandowski.

But their push for a first title since 2019 seemed to have taken a toll after Laporta claimed they cannot bring anyone through the gate in January due to current financial restrictions.

The president of LaLiga, Javier Tebas, exposed the problems to Mundo Deportivo. “The levers have worked for them this season but not next season,” he said.

“They have to reduce the wage bill, they cannot continue with more than 500 million euros (436 million pounds).”

Barcelona are trying to force some club legends out as soon as possible to help repair their finances.
