Pelé’s mother is unaware that her son, the world-famous soccer legend, has died, his sister has revealed.
Celeste, who just turned 100 and is cared for by her daughter Maria Lucia do Nascimento, has not been informed of her son’s death.
News broke overnight that Pelé’s only surviving brother has yet to tell the matriarch that her famous soccer player son has lost his fight against colon cancer.
His home is said to be on the route funeral organizers have planned before the soccer star is laid to rest in the world’s highest cemetery.
The soccer icon celebrated his mother’s recent 100th birthday with a post on Instagram. Celeste, who is cared for by Pelé’s only surviving sister, María, is unaware of the death of her son.
Pelé died at the age of 82 at the Albert Einstein Hospital in Sao Paolo on December 28 of multiple organ failure.
Maria said in an interview in her homeland: ‘We talked but she doesn’t know the situation. She is in her own world.
Referring to the three-time World Cup champion by his family’s childhood nickname, Dico, he added: “He opens his eyes when I mention his name and I say, ‘Let’s pray for him,’ but he’s not really aware of what what am I saying.’

He wrote alongside a photo of himself with his arms around his loved one: ‘Today we celebrate 100 years of Celeste’s life. She from a very young age taught me the value of love and peace.
I have over a hundred reasons to be grateful for being your son.
I share these photos with you, with a lot of emotion to celebrate this day. Thank you for every day by your side mom.’
Pele is scheduled to be buried in a 14-story cemetery in downtown Santos, where he played most of his club’s soccer on Tuesday, after three days of official mourning.
His body will be transferred from the hospital where he died to the Vila Belmiro de Santos stadium, where the public will be able to pay their final respects.
He will remain in the center circle for 24 hours before being taken through the streets of his hometown to briefly stop in front of his bedridden mother’s house, according to local media.
It will then be taken to its final resting place at the Memorial Necropole Ecumenica, which was awarded the Guinness World Records title for the highest cemetery in the world.
