A retired minister and active member of the South Los Angeles community, who had been a foster mother to six children, was killed in a hit-and-run incident.
Trina Newman, 61, was struck by a car just after dropping off a load of gifts for underprivileged children at a community center.
The crash occurred at 88th Street and South Broadway around 3:25 p.m., when Newman got off the curb and was getting into his car.
She was pronounced dead shortly after the collision.

Friends and family, including his daughter Amarrie Nicasio and childhood friend Michele Reed, are devastated by the loss and plead with the driver to come forward.
“Everyone is heartbroken at this moment,” said Pastor Kenneth Pitchford, a friend of Newman’s. KTLA. “Words cannot describe what she means to this community.”
“I still can’t believe it,” Nicasio said to ABC 7. I want to receive another phone call from her. It hurts much. The day before Christmas. Christmas will never be the same.

Newman was getting into her car after getting off the curb when she was struck
“She helped everyone she gave back to the community in every way she could. She is a good person. Whoever did this needs to come forward and turn themselves in,” she added.
Newman’s death was greeted with dismay by his childhood friend, Reed.
‘We’re all going to go one day, but go like this? It’s terrible. So that a person doesn’t stop and move on?’
The suspect’s vehicle has been described as a gray SUV, possibly a Nissan. The family hopes that security cameras in the area will help identify him.
Police are investigating the incident and are asking anyone with information to contact them.
