A woman was baffled by a list of “exotic” names she found on social media, some of which have wildly inaccurate translations.

The list, which was first found on Pinterest but shared on Reddit, purports to detail various girl names from Ireland, France, Italy and Spain.

But those who saw the list were quick to point out a series of errors, not only in the supposed origin but also in the translation.

The Irish list includes the names ‘Kiera’ and ‘Adara’, the former being the English version of the name Ciara, the latter being of Hebrew origin, plus there is no letter K in the Irish language.

Things get a bit more interesting on the French list, which includes the name ‘Burnadette’.

It can be assumed that this is a misspelling of the French name ‘Bernadette’, but readers pointed out that the word ‘burn’ translates to rather unfortunate in French.

The French list also includes the name ‘Bijou’, which translates to jewel, and ‘Bette’, which again has Hebrew rather than French origins.

Recommended names in Spanish include ‘Candi’ and ‘Coco’, while the Italian list seems more reasonable, although it might be unusual to describe several of them as ‘exotic’.

Another person quipped: “This is the first time I’ve seen Ireland described as ‘exotic’.”

While a third said: ‘Burnadette is really something. It’s not French… but it’s something.
