The Twister sequel, titled Twisters, will hit theaters for a summer 2024 release from Universal Pictures.

Global blockbuster Twister has announced the release date for the long-awaited sequel titled Twisters, set for a summer 2024 release.

Universal Pictures announced this week that the theatrical release will be on July 19, 2024.

The film has been in the works since 2020 and in October 2022, it was announced that the writer of 2015’s The Revenant, Mark L. Smith, would pen the script for the film.

The Sequel: Helen Hunt previously said she hoped to do the sequel herself and even wrote a script, but the studio didn't want to go through with it.

People magazine previously confirmed that Universal and Amblin Entertainment are working on the film.

Frank Marshall, who produced Jurassic World Dominion, will produce, and Lee Isaac Chung, who directed A24’s Minari, will direct.

Twisters will be co-financed by Warner Bros. Pictures and Universal Pictures.

The original Twister starred Helen Hunt and the late Bill Paxton. They played two storm-chasing scientists trying to collect data from a series of dangerously powerful tornadoes.

According to PeopleHunt, 59, had hoped to make a sequel to the film years ago. He wrote a script with Daveed Diggs and Rafael Casal, but couldn’t convince the studio to go ahead with it.

Universal described the sequel as “a new chapter of the 1996 movie.”

Bill Paxton sadly passed away in 2017 at the age of 61.

Directed by Jan De Bont (Speed), produced by Steven Spielberg and written by Michael Crichton (Jurassic Park), Twister grossed more than $494 million at the worldwide box office.

In addition to its box office success, Twister earned Oscar nominations for Best Visual Effects and Best Sound.
