The National Football League has disclosed to all 32 franchises how much they’ve spent laying off coaches and front office executives, and it’s a large number as you might expect.
During owners meetings last week in Irving, TX. League officials reportedly reported that teams had spent $800 million in the past five years.
For ESPNthe figures were calculated in such a way that league officials had individualized spreadsheets for each franchise, outlining their spending on laid-off employees.
There have been two head coaching firings this season as Carolina fired Matt Rhule in October, and Indianapolis fired Frank Reich just a month later.
Frank Reich was relieved of his duties as head coach of the Colts with four years remaining on his contract.
Rhule had four years remaining on a seven-year, $60 million contract. Reich also had four seasons remaining on his tenure on an August 2021 contract that amounted to an annual salary of $9 million.
Most recently, Tennessee Titans general manager Jon Robinson was relieved of his duties following the team’s resounding 35-10 loss in Philadelphia on December 4.
Robinson had “four full years” left on his contract with the AFC South franchise.
While positivity may be seeping into the East Rutherford-based New York Giants building after a prime-time win, their meters may be a bit stretched.
Matt Rhule, now the Nebraska coach, was also fired by Carolina with several years remaining.
The G-Men are currently paying for three, yes three, different head coaches. Naturally, their current leader in Brian Daboll is receiving a salary, along with 2021 head coach and his predecessor, Pat Shurmur.
Judge was fired in January, two years into a five-year deal. More or less the same, Shurmur. he was fired in 2020 with three years remaining on his half-decade deal.
While the NFL constructed and passed on such information to raise awareness of the “exact cost of instability,” there’s bound to be more of the same this offseason.
Incredibly, the New York Giants are paying former head coach Pat Shurmur, who they fired in 2020.
The NFL’s famous Black Monday is drawing ever closer with a litany of coaches and executives potentially in the dugout.
Arizona’s GM/coach pairing Steve Keim and Kliff Kingsbury may be under pressure, along with Houston coach Lovie Smith and Denver’s Nathaniel Hackett, among others.
Seven franchises fired their head coach during or after the 2021 NFL season, with that number expected to equal once more in 2022/23.
Arizona’s Kliff Kingsbury could be one of many coaches likely to be fired this offseason
