Why is this ‘sad’ room for rent in the city center called ‘literally the worst ever’? So would you pay $320 a week for it?
- Basic rental property on the edge of Melbourne city caught critic’s eye
- Jordie van den Berg of S*** Rentals of Melbourne criticized the Doveton flat
- He claimed that the ‘one-bedroom studio unit’ was more like a carport than a unit
A Melbourne ‘carport’ listed for rent as a one-bedroom apartment has been dubbed ‘literally the worst ever’.
The owner of the modest property in Doveton, 35 kilometers southeast of Melbourne’s central business district, is asking $320 a week for the rig.
But a popular TikTok rental property critic raised several major concerns in a damning video.
“It’s advertised as one bedroom, one bathroom,” said Jordie van den Berg, who publishes ‘Melbourne S*** Rentals’ on TikTok.
‘bBut if you look closely at Google Street View, it’s literally just an actual garage.

Popular TikTok rental housing critic Jordie van den Berg raised several major concerns in a damning video.
Frustrated Australians, fed up with high rental costs, raged at the listing.
“I think Bear Grylls could put together something sturdier than that in the jungle with a plastic fork,” said one commenter.
Another wrote: “For $320 tell ’em she’s dreaming.”
“Solving the rental shortage one car port at a time,” added a third.
Van den Berg showed inside photos of the apartment and criticized the “inside the living room” plumbing and the prominent aluminum ductwork leading from the range hood.
‘Can I interest you in a gutter that is inside your house? And a cooker hood that looks like it needs its own cooker hood? she teased herself.

Van den Berg criticized the interior of the Doveton property, which had been unoccupied for more than 30 days.
The maligned unit has been listed online for more than 30 days amid a shortage of rental properties.
However, the price of $320 is still well below the average rent for a one-bedroom unit in nearby Dandenong, which is $400 per week according to realestate.com.au
Mr. Van den Berg’s TikTok has amassed 110,000 followers and has garnered 2.6 million likes for his comically dry analysis of Melbourne street rentals.
