Qatar’s Doha Metro system struggles to cope with thousands of Argentinian fans flooding Lusail Stadium for the World Cup final against France… with £9,000 tickets changing hands outside the stadium
Qatar’s metro system had trouble coping on Sunday as thousands of Argentine fans tried to reach the Lusail Stadium for the World Cup final against France.
The metro system is the main route fans must take to travel to the stadium, which will host the main game of the tournament.
The Supreme Committee, which oversaw local preparations for the tournament, said security officials were briefly ‘detaining’ people at subway entrances to stem the flow of traffic.
Officials have tried to regulate the metro system as fans seek to reach the World Cup final.
Officials then allow them into key Metro stations to help regulate flow into the system.
Reports claim that organizers have closed the Msheireb metro station in an attempt to deal with the number of fans seeking to travel to the stadium.
Taxi drivers have dropped some fans 50 minutes from Lusail Stadium to avoid the traffic jam.
Qatar Rail confirmed that there were ‘long waiting times’ on the metro services due to high demand.
“All Doha metro stations are currently experiencing high demand,” a statement read.
‘Access to stations is delayed and long waiting times must be expected. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
“We will inform you as the situation changes.”
The Lusail Stadium has a capacity of 88,966.
Around 50,000 Argentine fans are expected to attend the final, while 6,000 French fans will be inside the Lusail Stadium.
Tickets are officially sold out for the final, but fans without tickets have reportedly been quoted around £9,000 to secure a seat at the stadium.
Lionel Messi has confirmed that the final will be his last game in a World Cup.
The Argentina captain looks to add that medal from every major World Cup winner to the most glittering trophy case the game has ever seen.
France is seeking back-to-back World Cup triumphs after emerging victorious at the 2018 tournament in Russia.
