Brock Purdy is hailed after the Niners win NFC West title with the QB ‘eerily similar’ to Tom Brady

San Francisco quarterback Brock Purdy has earned comparisons to Tom Brady after leading the 49ers to the NFC West division title.

The Niners wrapped up the split and booked their playoff spot with a 21-13 road win over their arch-rivals, the Seattle Seahawks, on Thursday Night Football.

It was only Purdy’s second start for San Francisco after Kyle Shanahan had to call out ‘Mr. Irrelevant after the injuries to Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo this season.

Yet despite being the bottom pick in last year’s draft, the 22-year-old has posted victories with the Niners, displaying confidence and poise.

His performances have earned him praise from many in the football landscape, with some comparing the quarterback to the seven-time Super Bowl winner.

Amazon Prime Thursday Night Football analyst Michael Smith said: “I remember asking Brady about going to play on the road in harsh environments, you know what he said?

He said, “I played at Michigan, this is nothing.” Same as Brock Purdy says playing in Oklahoma helped prepare him for this big stage.

“Again, I’m not saying he’s Brady, but he’s eerily reminiscent. The comparison between Brock Purdy in 2022 and Brady in 2001 is amazing. There is the same level of poise and composure. I have seen this movie before.

The former Iowa State QB was promoted after leading San Francisco to the NFC West crown on Thursday.

Golden State Warriors star Draymond Green echoed Michaels’ thoughts somewhat while speaking to the Amazon Prime crew at halftime.

He said: “I was watching the game last week and I said to some of my friends, ‘hey guys, do you think we’re looking at the next Tom Brady?’ You know, Tom Brady is a sixth-round pick.

‘Are we seeing the next Tom Brady? We don’t fully know it yet, but to see what he’s doing with this guy is absolutely incredible.”

Purdy himself joined the TNF team after the game, explaining that he foresaw this in his future. However, at the time, well, I hadn’t thought of that.

“I’ve always believed in myself,” Purdy said. “I didn’t know where it would come from, but I figured things like this would happen, in terms of leading an NFL team in the future.

“I’ve always had that kind of confidence in myself, but in terms of timing, I just turned it over to God and trusted his plan.”

There were numerous social media accounts joining in on the Purdy-Brady comparisons, while others were simply pleased to see another (so far) NFL Cinderella story play out.

“I’m sold on Brock Purdy,” wrote one user. ‘What a good story, even if it’s just this. From the last pick to the playoffs. And yes, the team is good, but he is playing.’

San Francisco actually qualified for the postseason with a 21-13 victory in Seattle. The win over their rival earned them the NFC West crown.

The Twitter reaction saw some compare the young QB to the GOAT, while others were just happy.

Another good QB story this season, Geno Smith, congratulated Purdy with a postgame hug.

The rookie threw a pair of touchdown passes to George Kittle as San Francisco clinched the division title for the first time since 2019.

Purdy connected on his first 11 pass attempts, including a 28-yard TD to Kittle in the first quarter as the quarterback executed two fakes before hitting his tight end wide open.

Purdy and Kittle connected again early in the second half when Seattle’s defense blew a coverage and left Kittle open for a 54-yard touchdown run and a 21-3 San Francisco lead. Purdy finished 17 of 26 for 217 yards, joining Aaron Rodgers as the only quarterbacks since at least 1950 to have a passer rating of at least 115 in each of their first two starts.
