ITV competition will see contestants compete for a spot in West End production of Mamma Mia!

An exciting new musical theater competition from ITV will see contestants battle it out for a place in the West End production of Mamma Mia! the musical.

The talent show-style program, Mamma Mia! I Have a Dream will be released nationwide in 2023 and will include an eight-part series that will air on ITV1.

The series will cast two newcomers to play the roles of Sophie and Sky, played by Amanda Seyfried and Dominic Cooper in the original movies.

Contestants will battle to be the next West End star, performing for a panel of celebrities who are experts in both music and drama, with viewers voting on who performs for the following week.

The show will be filmed against the backdrop of the Greek islands, where the original story takes place.

The competition will culminate in a live finale, broadcast from a theater in London’s West End.

The series is being produced by Thames, who also makes Britain’s Got Talent and I Can See Your Voice.

The success of Mamma Mia! spawned two record-breaking blockbuster films, starring such stars as Meryl Streep, Christine Baranski, Julie Walters, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsgård, Amanda Seyfried, Dominic Cooper, Lily James and Cher.

Mamma Mia! creator and global producer Judy Craymer will serve as co-executive producer of the show and will be on hand to assist contestants.

Judy Craymer said: ‘Mamma Mia! It has always been a show that has encouraged young actors and provided opportunities for those making their stage debut, just as our current London Sophie and Sky (Meg Hateley and Miles Henderson) are making their West End debut. , so it feels perfect for a TV show that will be scouting new musical theater talent.

The new show will reboot the musical theater casting talent show genre on TV screens. Any dream will do! and its successor shows, How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria?, I’d Do Anything and Over the Rainbow, saw contestants compete for West End roles.

In 2007, the BBC’s Any Dream Will Do sought out a new unknown lead to play Joseph in a West End revival of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

The show was hosted by Graham Norton, who announced Lee Mead as the winner of the final public telephone vote on June 9, 2007.

A year later, the BBC’s I’d Do Anything focused on finding a leading lady to play Nancy and three young performers to play Oliver Twist in the 2009 West End revival of the British musical Oliver.

The show, named after Oliver! the song I’d Do Anything, was introduced by Graham Norton with Andrew Lloyd Webber again supervising the show, along with stage producer Cameron Mackintosh.
