A Melbourne driver displayed exceptional awareness and reflexes to avoid hitting a child who was running across the road
Suddenly, from the left, a child is thrown from an adult’s grasp directly into the path of the oncoming car, but the alert driver manages to swerve sharply to avoid the collision, all the while shouting a loud expletive.
The driver, who named himself only ‘OP’, received praise for his knowledge and evasive skills from other Reddit users.
‘ I gasped audibly. I didn’t see it until the car was already swerving,” wrote one.
‘The guy was very lucky that OP was so alert.’
“I can barely see him, I’m surprised you didn’t hit him,” wrote another.
Many reflected on how lucky the escape was.
This terrifies me. I mean, I’ve looked over my shoulder quickly to make sure no one is in my blind spot that many times,” one wrote.
The driver, who was going below the speed limit, managed to swerve at the last second to avoid the boy.
‘If the guy did that right now, that kid would be dead.’
In response to the speeding accusations, OP said: “This is a 70km/h zone and I was traveling at 68km/h.”
“There are a number of people who accuse me of speeding in order to blame me in some way and I think I have every right to point out that they are wrong.”
‘Thank you to everyone who has asked if I’m okay!
“I am perfectly fine and I am very glad that no one was hurt. I was very aware that there were no other cars in my immediate vicinity, so it was a huge stroke of luck.
“I really hope the experience has been a learning experience for parents and children and that this video can serve as a reminder to be alert on the roads!”
