The proposed German takeover of a sausage casing factory in Lanarkshire by the Germans has baffled Scottish politicians.

Devro last week agreed to be acquired by Saria, part of the Rethmann family empire, in a deal worth £667 million.

But politicians are angry that a British company will end up in foreign hands.

Liz Smith, shadow cabinet secretary of the Scottish Conservatives for finance and economics, said: ‘The crucial point is that Scottish jobs are preserved.

But it is a pity that foreign companies are needed to recognize the value of our domestic industries.”

Willie Rennie, spokesman for the Scottish Liberal Democrat economy, said: ‘At a time of acute economic uncertainty for many, workers need to know that this deal will create a solid platform for growth.’

SNP MP Angus MacNeil said takeovers of Scottish companies would be ‘an upward trend’ if weakness in the UK economy is not addressed.
