Footage has emerged of Hervé Renard’s half-time team talk just before his Saudi Arabian side secured one of the biggest upsets in World Cup history by beating Argentina.

Renard’s side went into half-time trailing just ten minutes into the game after Lionel Messi scored his seventh goal in the World Cup final with an early penalty.

While some managers may try to consolidate during the break, especially when facing such a heavily favored side, Renard opted to go on the offensive and berate his players for their performance.

In a particularly fiery moment, the 54-year-old manager asks his players if they just want to ‘take a picture with Lionel Messi’ and wonders if his team thought they were capable of getting back into the game .

“Messi, he has the ball in the center of the field and you are standing [hands up] for the defense … you have to go mark him in the middle,’ he said. Grab your phone and take a picture with him!

‘Do you think we won’t be able to come back? Don’t you feel it? You play relaxed. Come on guys, this is the World Cup. Give everything!’

When Renard’s impassioned speech was simultaneously translated into Arabic by a member of his staff, he concluded by reminding his players of the league’s commitment and imploring them to ‘give everything’ to chase victory.

Moments after the end of Renard’s team talk, his team seemed to re-enter the field with a renewed sense of the meaning of the game.

Just three minutes after play resumed, Saleh Alshehri fired his shot past Emiliano Martinez into the Argentina goal to level the underdogs.
