Paul O’Grady joins BBC rival Boom for Christmas show months after ending 14-year stint at Radio 2 

It’s the station that claims to win over older BBC Radio 2 listeners.

Now Boom Radio has captured former Beeb favorite Paul O’Grady for a Christmas Day special.

O’Grady left Radio 2 in August after 14 years, just months after sharing his slot with comedian Rob Beckett, 36.

At the station, 67-year-old O’Grady had hosted a Christmas Day show featuring his famous triples – three songs by one artist played back to back.

His two-hour special for Boom was praised by the station’s co-founder David Lloyd, who said, “This is an absolute coup and we’re thrilled to have Paul on board.”

O’Grady, who will be presenting from his home in Kent, said: ‘I’m looking forward to being back on the radio for Christmas Day lunch with the usual unpredictable chaos.’

His show features songs from the 60s and 70s, messages from listeners, and a skit about Santa Claus.

Founded in February 2021 targeting baby boomers born between 1946 and 1964, the station is the fastest growing broadcaster in the country and now attracts 443,000 weekly listeners.

O’Grady’s BBC exit was the latest in an exodus of radio stars including Vanessa Feltz, 60, and Simon Mayo, 64.
