Avoid danger! The tips to help you keep your kids safe

  • Teach them about the buddy system and always have a friend or an adult accompany them
  • Never teach them to help an adult and don’t teach them to be “the hero.”
  • Pay close attention to who cares for your child when you are not there
  • Do not take your eyes off your child in public
  • Put GPS trackers on it
  • Keep weapons with you, such as pepper spray or a firearm – if comfortable – in case of an emergency
  • Talk to them about the dangers that can sneak up on them

Then child safety expert and pediatrician Dr. Free N. Hess shared a video of a convicted child predator sharing the tricks he used to lure children, the pediatrician issued a chilling, but serious, warning to parents.

Captioning the video, “Confessions of a Child Predator, Target Identification, and Care,” shared Dr. Hess that by “knowing what predators look for and how they work can give you the knowledge you need to keep your child safer.”

The video shows convicted child predator Jack Reynolds serving more than 12 years in prison for molesting children in the 1980s.

Reynolds — who claims he has more than 300 victims — said he took part in the interview because he feared social media gives predators more tools to harm children.

When the interviewer questioned how Reynolds was able to “get” [children] alone,” he replied, “Care. I would check their family situation, I would check their clothes to see how well off they were financially, I would check their social interactions with other kids.

“If I thought the kid had friends they’d tell, I wouldn’t approach him,” Reynolds said. “If I thought the father was a threat, I wouldn’t approach the child. A mother who has problems with the family, here comes the superhero to help.”

While hard to hear, the video sheds light on the reality of dangers for children.

It emphasizes that parents should pay close attention to those who are often around their child and teach their child the importance of the buddy system – which encourages children to never go anywhere alone.

Another child safety expert echoed Dr. Hess and emphasized that we live in a world where parents teach their children to be kind, and while kindness is important, parents should teach them that adults never need help from a child.

“For many women and children who were lured into human trafficking situations or lured away to be victimized or killed by serial killers or serial rapists, the one thing they had in common was a desire to be helpful.

So my tip is don’t be helpful. Many people think that small children who are lured away are lured away with the promise of cookies, candy and ice cream, but many of them were actually lured away by these kidnappers because that person asked them for help.

“Hey, can you help me find my bike? Hey, my puppy ran away, can you help me find it?”

And for anyone who survived those circumstances, they all said they were uncomfortable but didn’t want to be helpful.

“If you are a child, understand that no grown man will ask you for help. You don’t have to be the hero, not be helpful, be the closest person possible.”

She added that if a stranger bumps into your kids, they should never apologize because it makes them seem like an “easy target.”

Besides being ‘unhelpful’, a self defense expert who regularly shares tips on his TikTok account, gave parents five tips to protect their children.

His first tip was to pay attention to who is “watching” or taking care of your child when you are not there.

This means paying attention to their “nursery, babysitter, the babysitter’s boyfriend, their brother, all those kinds of things.”

“Pay attention to who is watching your child, this is the most important thing, especially before your children can talk.”

The second tip the self-defense and child safety expert gave was to never take your eyes off your kids in public, as this can lead to life-threatening situations.

“In the meantime, don’t talk to your friends [your child] run around the park because it takes a second for someone to grab them.”

While it may seem extreme, the expert’s third tip advised parents to install GPS trackers somewhere on their child.

“There are little GPS trackers that you can tie in their shoelaces, you can put them in their backpacks, you can put them on their clothes.”

The fourth tip emphasized ways to react in case your child got into a dire situation.

“Number four, be physically fit and know how to protect your child, or at least have self-defense tools like firearms or pepper spray or whatever you feel comfortable protecting your kids with.”

Finally, the self-defense and child safety expert said parents shouldn’t try to hide them from the reality of the potential dangers that could sneak up on them.

“Once they are old enough to understand and speak talk to them about things like strangers and not letting anyone touch you and make sure you are their friend and you tell them the truth so they always come to you if there is always a problem.’
