Chase Young, the star of the Commanders, will have to watch his team from the sidelines a bit longer as he has been ruled out of Monday night’s game against the undefeated Eagles.

Young, who only returned to practice with the team at the beginning of the month following an ACL tear in his right knee, exactly one year ago today, has not yet been cleared by the team’s medical staff.

However, the one-time Pro Bowl selectee is “almost done and there is a good chance he will make his debut next week” [against the Texans] if everything goes well at training this week Ian Rapoportfrom the NFL network.

Last week, Commanders head coach Ron Rivera said it was too early for Young to return to the field ahead of the team’s eventual 20-17 loss to the Vikings.

“That’s probably jumping the gun,” he said. ‘[…] We are going to follow what the trainers and doctors tell us about this.’

Young, the team and doctors have taken extra care in recovering the pass rusher from surgery, transplanting part of his left patellar tendon to repair the tear on the other side.

The 23-year-old said that although training was without pads and helmets, he felt “like a footballer again”.

He insists he had no timetable for when he would be back.

“It was really just more day-to-day,” Young said. “Just focusing on the plan at hand, not really worrying about the noise — just really worrying about myself, searching for my soul, and just staying focused.”

Even missing Young, Washington’s front four — led by defensive tackles Jonathan Allen and Daron Payne and edge rusher Montez Sweat — have been a key part of the team’s three-game winning streak to return to .500 at 4-4 before losing to Minnesota.

The 2020 No. 2 pick from Ohio State, Young was the AP Defensive Rookie of the Year that season when he had 7-and-a-half sacks. Last season, he had one and a half before getting injured on November 14 against Tampa Bay.

As things stand, the Commanders are bottom of the NFC East with an overall record of 4-5.

The team’s last win came in late October, beating the Colts 17–16.
