The attacking midfielder, 20, who joined Jurgen Klopp’s Reds for £8m this summer, made four appearances for the Portugal Under-21s and scored twice, but has now left the team with no official reason for his decision.

The statement read: ‘A footballer has decided to stop representing the Portugal Under-21 team.

“Fábio Carvalho has informed the Portuguese Football Federation via text messages that he has no intention of continuing to represent Portugal at Under-21 level.

“This player’s decision was announced after the call-up for friendlies against the Czech Republic and Japan.”

Carvalho has made 11 Premier League appearances since signing this summer, scoring twice

The little prodigy has made 16 appearances in all competitions for Liverpool this season, scoring twice, including a 98th-minute winner against Newcastle in August.

Carvalho was named in the 55-man provisional squad of the Portuguese seniors ahead of the upcoming World Cup in Qatar, but failed to make the final.

Seleção’s U21 team will play against the Czech Republic on Friday and against Japan on Tuesday.
