The Block’s winning auctioneer reveals why some teams were doomed to fail from the start

The Block’s winning auctioneer Tom Panos has admitted he was not surprised by the results of Sunday night’s heart-pounding final.

Two couples failed to sell their homes, while Omar and Oz won a record $1.6 million in the latest auction.

Panos said most couples were doomed from the start due to the rural location of the properties and the current market.

“The first reason the others didn’t do well was the market. It’s not a good time to sell real estate,” he said realestate.com.au,.

“We auctioned the properties in an environment where there has been a bad story from the Reserve Bank about wanting to beat the dragon of inflation with higher interest rates.”

Tom went on to say that Nine’s decision to film in Gisborne, Victoria, also played a big part in the shocking results.

“Last year around this time was the height of excitement. We thought to ourselves, the Zoom employee would never return to the office. This made all the difference to The Block’s choice of location,” he explains.

‘A year later, people are back on the plane. They don’t do tree and sea changes, they’re back in town now.’

Omar Slaimankhel and Oz Malik were crowned winners on Sunday. They sold their reno for $5,666,666 and took home a record $1.6 million in prize money.

The western Sydney partners earned the largest sum of all five Block houses, far exceeding the $4.08 million reserve.

But there was also heartache for two couples, Ankur and Sharon, and Dylan and Jenny, who failed to sell their house at auction.

Their properties were passed on when they failed to attract a bidder above the $4.08 million reserve, with both drawing a top bid of $4,075,000.

The couples continued to negotiate with their highest bidders after filming.

It marks the first time a Block property has not been sold at auction since season four in 2011, when two teams’ homes were passed.

Tom and Sarah-Jane didn’t fare much better, selling their home in the Macedon Ranges for a profit of just $20,000.
