Four children who vanished after getting into a car with a man covered in face tattoos have been found safe and well. 

Joshua Carter, 28, was seen taking the kids from an address at The Leap, north of Mackay, Queensland around 11.30am on Thursday in a white 2005 Nissan Patrol 4WD. 

Police issued an amber alert on Thursday and said the children, aged eight, seven, four and three knew the man and may be at ‘significant risk’. 

Queensland Police confirmed on Friday morning the children have been found but Mr Carter remains on the run.

His appearance was described as ‘solid’ by cops, who said he is around 175cm tall with a shaved head and full bushy beard with multiple face and body tattoos.

One of Mr Carter’s face tattoos reads ‘Why so serious?’, a nod to Batman villain the Joker’s catchphrase from the 2008 movie The Dark Knight. 

He also has the face of the fictional character inked across his neck.
