One woman has urged employers to offer “dog moms” the same flexibility as working moms and says pet ownership has made her realize “how difficult” it is for parents in the job market.
Mary Rose Madigan, 28, of Sydney, adopted her black Chihuahua Frank with her partner last year.
In a personal essay for News.AuMary — whose family owned dogs when she was growing up — admitted she didn’t realize how hard it would be to have a pet of her own.
Just as parents leave their kids to go to the office, Mary says she also struggles with “maternal debt” every time she leaves the house.

While she can technically leave Frank unattended for several hours, Mary says she can’t relax knowing he’s probably pining for her at home.
As a result, the writer enrolled him in a doggy day care program that costs $65 (£36) every day.
However, the organization will impose an additional fine if owners are late for collection.
This has prompted Mary to call on employers to give pet owners “the same flexibility and understanding as mothers of human children.”

In addition, Mary says she regularly hosts social events when she can’t bring Frank because she “can’t bear to let him down further.”
She wrote, “I watch working moms get out early, introduce flexible hours, or work from home more often with absolute envy.”
Despite being aware that she is in a very “privileged position,” Mary says she wants to encourage companies to extend the same rights for pet owners.
She added: ‘I know they are not children; I know I’m not a mother and I can never understand the full extent of the burden, but I love my dog more than I thought I could.”
Last year, the writer went viral when she opened up about her experience of dating a plus size.
In an essay for MammaMia, Mary explained that there is a stigma surrounding plus-size women and dating, with people assuming they have more trouble finding a match than slimmer women.
However, she said that she has never had any problems finding a man, and her only problem is other people’s assumptions and expectations.
She said that when she talked about dating at work a few years ago, she was never asked why men were interested in the slim girls, but her coworkers would comment on her size.
