Leeds 4-3 Bournemouth: Crysenio Summerville strikes late once again to secure three points

Leeds was downstairs and they looked out. That may have been true of Jesse Marsch as well. Elland Road was simmering with unrest. The barometer for Marsch and his players had entered the red zone again. In trouble again.

A week after an incredible win over Liverpool gave the manager more time, his team was 3-1 behind rivals Bournemouth with half an hour to go.

The American walked along the sidelines, head down, hands crammed into the pockets of his anorak. Then it all changed. Marsch sent Sam Greenwood and the substitute scored. He then had an assist for Liam Cooper’s equalizing goal.

Elland Road erupted. The cheers at halftime were forgotten as they roared their team to get hold of the winner.

Then, in the 84th minute, the time had come. Another substitute, Wilfried Gnonto, left halfway down the Bournemouth half, chased by a group of red and black shirts.

Gnonto timed his pass to perfection and slipped the ball through the path of Crysencio Summerville, Leeds’ hero in the Anfield win. Summerville kept his cool and strode into the penalty area to bury his shot past Mark Travers.

In doing so, the young Dutchman became the youngest Leeds player to score three goals in three top games for Leeds since Alan Smith in 2001. When the ball hit the back of the net, there were fireworks over Elland Road. Literal.

Say what you love about Leeds and their defense in particular, but this is a group that still plays for their manager. Still believing. Still fighting.

And what about Bournemouth? They were excellent for much of this match and will be kidding themselves that they left West Yorkshire with nothing. Marcus Tavernier stood out with a goal and two assists. But it’s four defeats on the bounce now, after interim manager Gary O’Neil went unbeaten in his first six games.

This was an incredible encounter that rocked from start to finish. The fuse was lit after 52 seconds in a hectic first half. Philip Billing lost possession almost halfway through and the ball went through for Summerville. After two goals in his last two games, he is brimming with confidence and storming through on goal.

Summerville was shot down by an awkward challenge from behind by Marcos Sensi and referee Tony Harrington pointed straight at the dot. Rodrigo stepped up and sent Travers the wrong way when Elland Road exploded in celebration.

It felt like Leeds were on course for another valuable win, but the credit went to Bournemouth. They caught the early blow and tied the score in the seventh minute.

The ball was worked over the right and a cross from Billing was headed towards the back of his own penalty area by Robin Koch. Unfortunately for the German, Tavernier was lurking there unnoticed and he volleyed past Illan Meslier.

Shortly after, Dominic Solanke was headed over the head, before Billing silenced Elland Road in the 19th minute with another goal. The Leeds defense barely covered themselves with glory with this one either, as Tavernier chased a long ball to the left and drove away from Rasmus Kristensen.

Tavernier’s thumping effort was blocked by Meslier, but he reacted fastest to retrieve the loose ball and put it to the edge of the penalty area where Billing arrived unmarked to take a left footed shot into the roof of the net. creak from 15 meters.

The mood in the ground changed almost immediately. It could have gotten worse, as Meslier came to the rescue of his team twice before halftime.

First, the French keeper raced out of his goal to drive away from Jefferson Lerma’s feet when Bournemouth broke through halfway through. He then came down to save from Kieffer Moore, who should have scored when he was played in by a header from Billing.

Both sets of players called on the referee in the 38th minute when Solanke went down from a challenge from Kristensen shortly after Koch was flattened by a stray elbow from Moore. It was never going to be a penalty, but Moore was lucky enough to escape unpunished. Chris Mepham was shown a yellow card in the 52nd minute for a similar incident involving Rodrigo.

Angry greeted the halftime whistle and there were more as Bournemouth extended the lead less than three minutes after the restart.

The excellent Tavernier was involved again, driving to the left and into the box. His low cross reached Solanke who let the ball pass under his feet and then shot through Tyler Adams’ legs and inside the post.

Marsch turned in disgust over the sidelines. It was the worst possible start to the second half. He had brought in Gnonto at halftime and Greenwood soon followed when the Leeds manager tried to change the game. It worked.

Six minutes after Greenwood’s arrival, the home side attacked on the left and Kristensen crossed the back post into Summerville. He switched Pascal Struijk in whose attempt was blocked, but the ball ran to Greenwood and he curled a beautiful shot past Travers from the edge of the penalty area.

Suddenly Bournemouth were back on the back foot and moments later they came close to equalizing as Rodrigo attacked from the left and cut in, but his attempt from a difficult angle was high and wide.

However, Leeds fans didn’t have to wait much longer. In the 68th minute, Greenwood sent a corner over from the left and captain Cooper rose above Adam Smith to plant a header through Travers’ legs.

Bournemouth were not ready in this pulse-pounding match. Seconds after coming off the bench, Jack Stacey came free on the right and sent a shot inches wide of Meslier’s far post.

But Leeds had the last word and Summerville again. Full-time there were more fireworks overhead as cheering Leeds fans sang along to I Predict a Riot. It sure was.
