A homeless man accused of raping and robbing a woman while jogging in New York City’s West Village has been held without bail while the victim recovers with broken bones in the ICU.
Carl Phanor, 28, was remanded in custody Friday afternoon after a brief hearing on charges including rape, predatory assault and theft.
More details also emerged about two similarly despicable sexual assaults Phanos allegedly committed this year.
The victim of Thursday’s incident, a 43-year-old woman, is in intensive care after the early morning attack through Hudson River Park on Pier 45.
Carl Phanor appeared in court on Friday for raping a woman in New York City
Details emerged of two other despicable sexual assaults that Phanor also allegedly committed earlier this year
Thursday morning’s victim was running along the Hudson River at Pier 45 around 5:45 a.m. when Phanor grabbed her from behind and threw her to the ground, it is alleged.
He sat on top of her, put both hands around her neck, then squeezed “hard,” “choking her so much that she went in and out of consciousness.”
He would have taken off her running shoes, pants and underwear and then raped her.
The woman passed out during the attack and when she regained consciousness, her attacker had fled with her mobile phone, debit card, hotel key card and ID card.
Detectives discovered that the woman’s card was used several hours later, at 8:55 a.m., to buy a bus ticket at the Port Authority bus station.
In CCTV footage, Phanor is said to be showing the card at a Greyhound newsstand, wearing a green-and-yellow knit ski hat and a maroon hoodie with white lettering “UNH” across the chest.
Phanor was arrested later that day in the same outfit – with the woman’s stolen belongings, police say.

During Friday’s court hearing, the victim was told that the victim is in the intensive care unit of a hospital with broken bones after the attack.
Phanor declined to plead, and Judge Jonathan Svetkey ordered him to be held without bail and undergo a mental health assessment prior to the next court appearance on Nov. 9.
Phanor is also accused of two other attacks.
On March 27, around 6 a.m., he allegedly assaulted another woman at Pier 46 near West Street and Charles Lane in Manhattan.
He grabbed the woman to the ground, “wrapped his hands around her neck and squeezed him tight” while holding her, police said.
Phanor would then have forced her into oral sex.

Outrage over the rape grew after it emerged that the suspect, Carl Phanor, has a long criminal history
DNA recovered from the victim matched that of Phanos.
At around 5 a.m. on October 6, Phanor attacked another woman who was walking near East 37th Street and the FDR in Manhattan.
Like his other victims, he is said to have grabbed her from behind and put her in a stranglehold.
The woman broke free, but Phanor chased her again and “as she struggled, her jeans were torn open.”
She screamed and Phanor fled with the woman’s cell phone and credit card, it is alleged.
Prosecutors said Phanor uses several aliases and has demonstrated a “clear predatory pattern.”
He is charged with first-degree rape, two counts of predatory sexual assault, two counts of strangulation, two counts of robbery and a single count of a first-degree criminal sexual act.
Zeldin was accused of profiting from rape, but rival Hochul has been criticized for her silence
Zeldin’s rival, current governor Kathy Hochul, has been criticized for her silence about the rape
Outrage over Thursday’s attack grew after it was revealed that the suspect, homeless Carl Phanor, has had 25 previous arrests and was also wanted for at least two other sex crimes in the city.
New York governor’s hopeful Lee Zeldin held a campaign event on the ground Friday.
Woke activists accused Zeldin of using rape to “promote his campaign” today after he delivered a speech at the scene.
Yelling protesters waved signs defaced with messages branding Zeldin “as dangerous as Trump” as they disrupted the campaign event.
