‘It feels like a good time’: Filmmaker Danny Boyle reveals 28 Months Later script has been completed and he’s ‘very tempted’ to direct it

Danny Boyle has revealed that a script has been written for the highly anticipated 28 Months Later and he would love to direct it.

The 66-year-old filmmaker delighted horror fans with 28 Days Later, which follows Jim (Cillian Murphy)’s character as he wakes up from a coma in a deserted Britain ravaged by a zombie virus.

Speak with NME ahead of the film’s 20th anniversary, Danny shared how screenwriter Alex Garland has completed a script for the third film, which the director hopes will come to fruition.

He said ‘I would be very tempted’ [to direct it]. It actually feels like a really good time.

“It’s funny, I didn’t think about it until you just said it, and I remembered, ‘Bang, this script!” set in England again, a lot about England. Anyway, we’ll see… who knows?’

The original film, released in 2002, was followed by 28 Weeks Later in 2007, in which a US-led NATO military force attempted to create a safe zone in London.

Danny talked about how it has become more difficult to get a theatrical release for movies due to the popularity of streaming, which prevented him from making another movie.

He said: “Maybe it’s coming back into the picture because one of the things that’s happening in the business right now is it has to be a big reason for you to go to the cinema because there are fewer and fewer reasons.

“It’s hard for companies that distribute movies and for movie theater chains to show movies, they struggle to get people to the cinema unless it’s something like Top Gun: Maverick or a Marvel.

Danny previously hinted at the future of the franchise in 2019 when he revealed that the script for the third film had impressed him.

He told The independent: ‘It’s pretty good. The original movie sparked a bit of a zombie drama revival and it doesn’t reference that. It doesn’t feel old at all.’

The original film — which also starred Naomie Harris and Brendan Gleeson — grossed $85.7 million on an $8 million budget.

The sequel – starring Robert Carlyle, Idris Elba and Rose Byrne – made $65.8 million on a $15 million budget.
