The Sandman season 2 is no longer a dream for Netflix fans

It’s time for fans of The Sandman to stop dreaming – Netflix has officially renewed the TV version of the hit comic book series for a second season.
After months of deliberation, Netflix has given Neil Gaiman, Allan Heinberg and the company the green light to make another season of The Sandman. The announcement was made on Twitter on Nov. 2, just hours after a now-deleted tweet from DC Comics virtually confirmed that the imaginative Netflix series would be returning to our screens (and our dreams).
Yes, it’s true: The Sandman returns to NetflixSays @neilhimself: “There are some amazing stories waiting for Morpheus and the rest… Now it’s time to get back to work. After all, a family meal is just around the corner And Lucifer waits for Morpheus to return to hell” pic.twitter.com/WKiWp7IDkkNov 3, 2022
In a press release, Neil Gaiman — the original creator and executive producer of The Sandman before Netflix’s adaptation — expressed joy at the show’s revamp before teasing what fans can expect from the series’ next entry.
“Millions and millions of people have welcomed, watched and enjoyed The Sandman on Netflix,” he said. “From established Sandman fans to those who were just curious and then became obsessed with the Lord of Dreams, his family and their goings-on. It gives me an incredible amount of joy to say that, as I work with Netflix and Warner Bros. , Allan Heinberg, David Goyer and I will bring more of The Sandman stories to life.
“There are some amazing stories waiting for Morpheus and the rest (not to mention more members of the Endless Family to meet). No one will be happier about this than the Sandman cast and crew: they are the greatest Sandman- fans are there. And now it’s time to get back to work. After all, a family meal is ahead. And Lucifer is waiting for Morpheus to return to Hell…”

Understandably, there’s no release date for The Sandman season 2 yet, nor has Netflix confirmed how many episodes the next season will have. However, the streaming giant hinted that the fictional world Gaiman created “will continue to expand,” suggesting the potential for spinoffs and more one-off episodic specials, such as Season 1’s secret 11th entry.
It’s unclear which comic books the second season of The Sandman will also come from, but Netflix teased that the hit TV adaptation “comes back with even more episodes and stories adapted from multiple The Sandman graphic novels.” Showrunner Allan Heinberg previously confirmed that Season 2 would draw heavily from the fourth graphic novel, also known as Season of Mists. However, since The Sandman season 1 featured stories from the first three volumes of Gaiman’s groundbreaking works, the show’s next outing is sure to draw from other books, including A Game of You or Fables and Reflections.
Analysis: no more nightmare scenario
The Sandman Season 1 was released on August 5 and quickly became one of Netflix’s hottest properties of 2022. The show was streamed nearly 70 million hours in its first few days of release and gained more attention in its first two weeks with over 200 million hours streamed on August 21. It took a whole month for the first season of The Sandman to officially end Netflix’s Top 10 Most Popular TV Shows (opens in new tab) – proof that Netflix’s worldwide fanbase was captivated by Morpheus and his company.
Unsurprisingly, then, many begged Netflix to renew the series for another outing. Despite its apparent popularity, however, fans of The Sandman had to wait nearly three months — from the show’s initial release — before the streaming company would green-light another season.
With each passing week, viewers became increasingly concerned about the prospects of a second season. And it’s easy to see why — Netflix has had a habit of canceling some of its most beloved shows before their time runs out, no matter how well they performed. Add to that the expensive production costs of The Sandman – Gaiman himself said it was a “really expensive show (opens in new tab)– and a second season was never a formality.
Still, the nightmarish wait for news about season 2 of The Sandman is finally over. If nothing else, we’re going to get another batch of episodes, and that’s great news. In our review of The Sandman Season 1, we said the series was “oh-so-almost brilliant,” so we’re excited to see how Gaiman, Netflix and the company can make the next season even better.
