The handyman-lover of murdered Queens mother Orsolya Gaal has landed a deal that will put him in jail for 25 years and convicted of manslaughter and not murder, despite cutting her to death and putting her body in a duffel bag.
David Bonola, 44, accepted a deal from the Queens District Attorney’s Office meaning he pleads guilty to one charge of first degree manslaughter. On November 19, he was sentenced to 25 years in prison.
On release – which could come sooner with good behavior – he will be under surveillance for five years.
The van Gaal family has not yet commented publicly on the verdict, but the prosecutor’s office insists they have been consulted throughout.
Her husband, Howard Klein, declined to answer questions outside the family’s home Wednesday morning.
The sentence is a major concession that prosecutors must make. Bonola stabbed Gaal more than 50 times while her teenage son was upstairs at her home in Forest Hills, Queens, then dragged her body across the street in her son’s duffel bag.
It was a shocking and horrific crime that terrified the neighborhood and led to a multi-day manhunt.

After his arrest, it was revealed that the couple was having an affair. Gaal’s husband was out of town at the time of her murder and Bonola had gone to the house to try to rekindle their romance.
He attacked her in the basement, stabbed her 50 times, then waited until the middle of the night to drag her body out of the house and dump it next to a highway.
The pair flirted on social media in the months leading up to her death, having met when she hired him to do handy work around the family home.
The prosecution has yet to explain why the charge was lowered from murder to manslaughter. A spokesperson told DailyMail.com that the van Gaal family was consulted about the plea deal and agreed to it.
‘That was the agreement between the lawyer and the people. The victims were consulted along the way,” they said.
In a statement, DA Melinda Katz said, “By pleading guilty, the defendant has accepted responsibility and is held fully accountable for his criminal acts.
“We extend our sincere condolences to the victim’s family and hope today’s plea will enable them to begin to heal.”
