A thrifty Australian mum has shown how she made 240 snacks that are as healthy as they are tasty for her children’s lunchboxes for just $100.
Lina’s healthy and delicious treats are all dairy and nut-free, can be frozen and work out to be just 41c per snack.
Lina, who followed The Healthy Mummy recipes, said she spent four hours in the kitchen whipping up the snacks and shared her tips for bulk cooking to save time and money.

To make all the snacks, Lina bought home brand staples from Coles and Woolworths as well apples, carrots, eggs and zucchinis all for just $100
The mum-of-two made 48-serves each of apricot and oat bliss balls, banana cake, apple and zucchini muffins, carrot and zucchini cakes and salted caramel bliss balls to keep her son’s school lunchboxes stocked.
Lina bought home brand staples from Coles and Woolworths including wholemeal plain and self-raising flour, oats, dates, coconut sugar, dried apricots, sultanas, coconut oil, and desiccated coconut.
In the fresh produce aisle she just had to pick up some apples, zucchinis, carrots and eggs and already had bi-carb soda, cinnamon and all-spice at home meaning her grocery bill for the baked snacks totalled just $100.
She said putting aside a few hours for a big cook up saves her time in the long run and buying in bulk and using home brand staples reduces her grocery bill.

‘Plan in advance and buy all the ingredients in one go and find recipes that you can freeze so you can make a big batch in one go,’ she said.
‘Start early and make sure you don’t have any other plans in the day or distraction. Look for home brand options especially for staple ingredients like flour, sugar, dried fruits, etc.’
Lina had to make sure all the pre-prepared snacks were completely free of any nuts as well as dairy products as her eldest son has a severe allergy that can result in anaphylaxis.
‘I made dairy-free recipes for both boys. I found out it is easier to make the same snacks for both, also to manage cross-contamination while I’m doing food preparation,’ she said.
