An American au pair has berated Australian drivers for a ‘weird’ driving habit she says no Americans have.
Caroline Armstrong, from Nashville, moved to Western Australia in September and was surprised to see “almost all Aussies back in car spaces,” wherever they are.
She is so aware of the habit of driving through parking garages looking for a place to drive through so she can pretend to reverse and “fit in” with the locals.

An American au pair living in Western Australia has criticized Aussies for always backing up in car spaces
The Nashville woman was surprised to witness the “weird” habit since she moved here in September. She confessed that she can’t reverse parking and instead drives around the parking lot looking for a place to drive through so she can pretend she did.
“I’ve noticed that everyone here is reversing into their parking space, which is weird. I can’t,” said the au pair.
“So to fit in, I’m still driving around the entire parking lot just to drive through and look like I was backing up. Why is everyone coming in here again?’
Aussies were shocked that the woman could not reverse parking.
“What do you mean you can’t?” said a man.
Others told her that not everyone in Australia does it.
‘Not everyone reverses on car spots. It’s safer if you leave, but if you do, no one will notice,” another man wrote.
One explained that so many people park in parallel because of the convenience of ‘reverse cameras’ and because ‘it’s easy to get away from it all’.
This isn’t the first time the expat has shared her problems with driving in Australia, she has also uploaded a video to TikTok explaining the main rigors of driving on another continent.
“Can’t find PRNDL on the left,” she captioned the video of her confused driving.
“Go the wrong way on the one-way street. No idea which way to go.’
“Turn on the windshield wipers instead of the flashing light.”
Ms Armstrong also previously shared a step-by-step guide to getting into her car in Australia.
Step number one was ‘checking the door handle for scorpions’. Her second step was ‘look for crocodiles under the car’ and ‘look for a dingo under the seat’.
Most importantly, she made sure to “check the visor for spiders.”
If she were to miss a potential animal, her last tip was to “turn the window down so you can jump out at any time.”
