Italian giants AS Roma have joined Juventus in the race to sign Memphis Depay, an outcast from Barcelona, according to reports.
The Dutch attacker came to the Catalan side on a free transfer in the summer of 2021 after his contract with Lyon expired.
He scored 13 goals in 38 appearances for Barcelona last season but has fallen down the pecking order at Camp Nou and is behind other attacking players such as Ousmane Dembele, Ferran Torres and Ansu Fati.
Barcelona forward Memphis Depay has been linked with move to Serie A sides Juventus and Roma
Depay had been widely linked with a move to Juventus over the summer, as the Catalan giants wanted to move him in their frenzied rush to register their summer signings ahead of the new season.
According to Italian outfit calciomercatoJose Mourinho’s Roma have now joined their Serie A rivals in the race for Depay.
After Juventus’ poor start to the season, with them crashing out of the Champions League and finishing seventh in the Italian League, Max Allegri’s side are still looking to add options to their roster.
Meanwhile, Roma currently occupy the last spot in the Champions League in fourth place, although they will be knocked out of the Europa League with a crunch game against Bulgarian Ludogorets this Thursday to decide who will advance from their group.
Both teams are tied on seven points, but Ludogorets has the better head-to-head record by beating the Italian squad 2-1 in Bulgaria on matchday one of the competition, and Mourinho’s squad wants the Dutch forward to join their squad to add.
Both Jose Mourinho and Max Allegri would like to add the Dutch attacker to their selection
Depay played just 131 minutes of football for Barcelona this season, scoring one goal
Depay is currently absent with a thigh injury, although he had played just 131 minutes for the club in three appearances for the club, scoring just once – in a 3-0 win over Elche in LaLiga in September.
The former PSV Eindhoven and Manchester United striker has struggled with Xavi’s side, scoring 14 goals and providing two assists in 41 games since his move to Barcelona.
Depay is expected to be a key man for the Netherlands at the World Cup this month, with 42 goals in 80 caps for his national team.
Louis Van Gaal’s side will face Qatar, Ecuador and Senegal in their first appearance in the final since 2014.
