Marvel and Disney have finally found their Wonder Man by tapping Yahya Abdul-Mateen II for their new Wonder Man series on Disney Plus.

Abdul-Mateen II, 36, plays Simon Williams, the son of a wealthy industrialist who eventually transforms himself into Wonder Man, via Screen Geek.

The role will be the third comic book character Abdul-Mateen II has tackled, following his portrayal of Black Manta in 2018’s Aquaman and Dr. Manhattan in the 2019 HBO series Watchmen, for which he won an Emmy Award.

Wonder Man debuted in Marvel Comics in The Avengers #9, which hit shelves in October 1964, created by writer Stan Lee and artists Jack Kirby and Don Heck.

Although the character appeared to have been killed off in that song, he would later be revived and join The Avengers and later as a founding member of the West Coast Avengers.

Simon Williams inherited his father’s munitions factory after his death, although the company is eventually decimated by Tony Stark’s Stark Industries.

Finally, he turns to the evil Baron Zemo to give him superpowers to betray the Avengers… although he would later form the West Coast Avengers.

Williams is also a successful movie star, which could very well play a part in the story given the involvement of another cast member.

In late August, it was revealed that Ben Kingsley will return in Wonder Man as Trevor Slattery, who made his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in 2013’s Iron Man 3.

Slattery was a failed British actor hired to play a fake villain in Iron Man 3, and he returned last year in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
