Ayat Hossain, 13, was swimming with two other boys, aged 16 and 18, in the Werri Lagoon near Gerringong on the NSW south coast about 5.15pm on Wednesday when the group got into trouble.

The 16 and 18-year-olds managed to get out of the water without help, while a lifeguard pulled Ayat to shore, unconscious.

Emergency services rushed to the lagoon, but despite their efforts, Ayat was pronounced dead at the scene.

A service for him will be held at the Lakemba Mosque on Thursday.

Locals reported seeing emergency vehicles and a rescue helicopter heading to the lagoon shortly after the drowning.

‘Two teenage boys managed to reach safety on their own, while a third was brought ashore by a lifeguard; however, the boy could not be revived,” NSW Police said.

“That part of the lagoon is not monitored.”
