Melbourne woman’s bold divorce sale draws crowds to her backyard: ‘Every dollar feeds a lawyer’
A resourceful woman has turned her heartbreak into side hustle by staging a cheeky garage sale to help finance her divorce and looming legal costs.
Her inventive flyer, promising free wine and bargains galore, quickly caught the attention of her community – and the internet.
Last weekend everything was on offer, from children’s toys and household items to maternity supplies and jewelry.
The Melbourne woman’s flyer featured the slogan: “Every dollar feeds a lawyer for 3.3 seconds.”
The anonymous seller also offered some items for less than stated, stating on the flyer, “Help me get divorced. All reasonable offers welcome. Free wine.’
The daring strategy turned out to be a bull’s-eye.
According to a friend, the event was not just about clearing unwanted items but also created a sense of camaraderie.
“This was actually one of my best friend’s yard sales,” she said on Reddit.

‘She had a fantastic day, lots of wines and lots of new friends! On her behalf, we would like to thank everyone who came by to do some shopping, and also to those who joined us and had a beer or wine with us.’
The divorcee herself reflected on the success of the day and said, “I did well in the sale.
‘I sold everything that wasn’t attached. I have to move next week, so now I have a mostly empty house to move into. It was a great day.’
The innovative sale took place in her suburban backyard, and guests left not only with second-hand treasures, but also with the feeling of having supported a woman determined to make a fresh start.
With free-flowing wine, cheerful atmosphere and a touch of humor, the event is being called the most creative way yet to fund legal costs.
“She is a determined Australian legend,” one person wrote online.
“Lawyers are known for their voracious appetites so I hope the garage sale went well,” mused another.
One wished: ‘Oh, I hope this will stimulate similar sales in other cities. I’d love to come over for wine and cheap appliances in Brisbane.’
