Disgusting chant at pro-Palestine rally in Melbourne after activists clash with Jewish demonstrators
A disgusting chant was hurled at members and supporters of the Jewish community during an anti-Semitism rally.
Grassroots group Lions of Zion organized a demonstration in Melbourne CBD on Sunday against a wave of anti-Semitic attacks in major cities, including a Sydney synagogue vandalized with a large red Swastika and the words “Hitler on top”.
At the same time, a procession of pro-Palestinian protesters paraded through the CBD from the State Library of Victoria.
Footage showed the two groups clashing with the pro-Palestinian group, who were heard shouting: “Go back to Germany.”
Victoria police officers lined the streets of the CBD as the pro-Palestinian rally marched through and managed to keep them separated from Israeli supporters.
Several commentators wondered why those shouting “go back to Germany” were not charged by police.
“Why aren’t they arrested for disorderly conduct and incitement to violence,” one person wrote.
It’s getting a little too real now. I’m done,” said another.
Pro-Palestinian demonstrators clashed with anti-Semitic demonstrators in Melbourne on Sunday
Large rallies in support of Palestine or Israel have become common in major cities since the start of the war between Israel and Hamas, which was sparked by Hamas’s attacks on Israel on October 7, 2023.
It is understood that the death toll for the conflict has passed 45,000, with most of the victims being Palestinian civilians.
However, Robert Gregory, Chief Executive Officer of the Australia Jewish Association, claimed that increased violence against Jewish communities has limited their ability to participate in demonstrations.
“The streets of Melbourne CBD have been deserted for over a year by a hate gang of anti-Israel activists,” he told Daily Mail Australia.
“Many Jewish people no longer feel comfortable venturing into the CBD while these gatherings are taking place.
“Today a small group of Jews, organized by the newly formed grassroots group Lions of Zion, decided to show that Melbourne CBD will not be closed to Jews.
Mr Gregory added that the verbal attacks by Australians across the board should be taken more seriously.
“The ugly verbal violence against the Jewish people must be condemned by everyone,” he said.
Police are investigating allegations that pro-Palestinian protesters told Lions of Zion to ‘go back to Germany’
“Racist taunts of ‘go back to Germany’ are intended to remind the Jewish people of the Holocaust carried out by Germany and to intimidate the Jewish community.
“It’s time for the Victorian Government to reclaim the streets of Melbourne CBD from the extremists.”
Victoria Police are appealing for anyone with information about the people behind the racist attack to come forward.
“Victoria Police had a visible presence at a protest in the CBD to ensure public safety,” a statement said.
‘We are aware of a small group of people shouting anti-Semitic comments during the demonstration.
Victoria Police will now conduct a review of these statements to determine whether an investigation will be launched.
‘Anyone with information that could assist police is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.’
