Uber driver’s immense list of rules for passengers sparks fierce rideshare etiquette debate

An Uber driver’s massive list of rules for passengers has left the internet fiercely divided.

A Reddit user who goes by @Lieutenant Chonkster took to the thread called Mildly Infuriating on Friday to share a photo of the elaborate lines hanging in the car during a recent rideshare trip.

According to the post, the list of rules – which was 11 paragraphs long – was taped to the back seat of the car on a laminated piece of paper.

They included everything from radio volume to cell phone use, and they sparked a heated debate about ride-sharing etiquette in the comments section.

“Greetings, I welcome you as my passenger. Here are clear etiquette rules I need to ensure a smooth ride for us,” the note began.

First, the driver explained that while pets are “welcome,” they must “remain on your lap or on the ground at all times to avoid pet hair for the next passenger.”

“Do your best to clean up after your pets to avoid cleaning fees,” the note continued.

The next rule read: ‘Always keep children safely in place. No kicking chairs or playing with doors/windows to avoid tickets.’

The driver then explained that you needed headphones if you planned to use the phone during the ride.

“I don’t want to hear phone conversations on speakerphone,” they added. “This goes for social media scrolling and such.”

The driver also said they would not turn down the radio for phone calls.

“I do not want to hear about your business meetings or personal business transactions,” they wrote.

“Keep them before you enter or leave my car. No exceptions. Don’t ask me that [turn down the radio].’

The driver then explained that no smoking or vaping would be allowed, and no food or drinks would be allowed in the car, except water.

They added that if any “mess” is left behind, they will report it to Uber and charge a cleaning fee “starting at $50, no matter how small the mess.”

‘Cover your nose/mouth when you cough or sneeze. If I notice you are not doing that, it will be reported,” she added. ‘Wear a mask when you are sick.

‘Wearing a seat belt is your business. However, it is possible that you will receive a ticket.’

They concluded the extensive list by writing, “If at any time you are not enjoying your ride, refuse to respect my rules, or feel uncomfortable in any way, I will be happy to stop so you can request another driver.” Ask me right away.

They also thanked the driver for “respecting their simple driving etiquette rules.”

“My Uber driver’s list of passenger rules,” the Reddit user simply captioned the post.

People immediately rushed to the comments section to share their thoughts, with many debating whether or not the list of regulations was “reasonable.”

“The only unreasonable thing is the driver’s refusal to turn down or turn off his music,” one person wrote.

“Everything else is common courtesy. Keep your pets/children safely in their seats, don’t leave your speakerphone on, don’t make a mess, or leave odors in the car by eating/smoking/vaping. Reasonable.’

However, they added that the note, which was written in ‘all caps’ and had a ‘preachy tone’, was ‘incredibly unpleasant’.

“I imagine this list may seem tense and restrictive to some, but honestly after reading it I think, ‘That’s me when I’m in someone else’s car,’” said another.

‘The only thing I have a problem with is that he doesn’t turn his music down. I mean it might be okay but come on man I had a long night and I hate the damn Eagles,” another user joked.

“I’m fine with all of this except the work calls and turning down the music,” read a fourth comment.

‘You provide a service to someone who pays you. You must meet all reasonable needs.

“You’re not my friend giving me a ride, you’re the person providing a service I paid for.”

“I agree that most of this is the polite thing to do, but the tone and length of it (and unwillingness to adjust his radio) immediately deserves a one star rating,” said a fifth.

‘The tone of it is: ‘get in, sit down, shut up and fuck you.’ I mean, “If at any point you’re not enjoying the ride, just tell me and I’ll stop so you can get off.” Are you serious? I can’t believe how many people here are defending this.’

“If I can’t call work with my Uber, I want another Uber,” another person announced.

“I’ll get to my destination before I finish reading it,” someone else joked.
