Mystery as hundreds of dead fish wash up on Coogee beach in Perth

Coogee Beach in Perth has been closed after hundreds of dead fish washed up along the coast.

The dead mackerel began washing up Friday, with swimmers warned not to swim in the stretch of ocean between Woodman Point Ammo Jetty and Omeo Wreck.

Department of Primary Industries workers are on site and have warned swimmers not to enter the water due to high levels of bacteria as the fish decompose.

More dead fish could wash up on nearby beaches as the tide gradually brings them in.

Fishermen have been advised not to collect or consume any of the fish due to the dangerously high levels of bacteria.

Pet owners are also being warned to prevent their animals from eating anything found on the beach.

Warning for beachgoers in Perth

People are reminded to stay safe around fish kills and follow this general advice from the Department of Health.

  • Do not swim in water areas with large numbers of dead and decomposing fish as these may contain high levels of bacteria and have an unpleasant odor
  • Do not fish in water with large numbers of dead fish.
  • It is not permitted to collect or consume fish from the waters near a fish kill
  • Do not collect or use dead fish for bait or consumption due to the risk of high bacteria levels
  • Do not allow pets or other animals to come into contact with dead or decomposing fish, either in the water or on shore
