Do you own one of the most wrecked cars of 2024? Number one is a hugely popular Ford family hatchback

The most scrapped vehicle in 2024 was the Ford Focus, new findings show.

Scrap Car Comparison data shows the Focus made up 6.3 percent of all vehicles scrapped last year, up two percentage points from 2023, as a greater share of blue-oval family hatchbacks were crushed.

While the Focus was the car most sent to the junkyard in 2024, the Vauxhall Astra and Vauxhall Corsa were both often discarded, finishing in second and third place respectively.

Many of the models most likely to be scrapped last year were sold in large numbers between 2000 and 2010.

And because the average age of cars scrapped by Scrap Car Comparison in 2024 is 17 years, many of these cars may no longer be viable to stay on the road due to the high cost of repairs.

Here’s a countdown of the 10 most scrapped cars of 2024:

10. Volkswagen Polo

In last place is the VW Polo, which made up 1.7% of all scrapped cars

Last but not least, the VW Polo was the tenth most scrapped car.

Of all scrapped models, the Polo made up 1.7 percent of the cars.

The German car giant – Britain’s best-selling car brand – is the third most scrapped carmaker of all, with 7.2 percent of the total share going to scrap yards in 2024, the figures show.

9. Peugeot 207

The Peugeot 207 was the ninth most scrapped car between January and December last year, with 2 percent of the year’s total scrapped.

In 2024, 2.2 percent of all scrapped cars were Mini Hatches from BMW.

After being relaunched by the German car giant in 2001, these are the era’s cars that were most often rendered unfit for the road and sold for their scrap last year.

According to the comparison site, the Mini Hatch was the eight most demolished car.

7. Opel Zafira

Vauxhall Zafira is the third Vauxhall model to appear in the top 10 and is in seventh place

The seventh most demolished car was the Opel Zafira MPV.

Zafira ‘B’ models (like the one pictured) have suffered a large number of fires in recent years. The DVSA found the main cause of the fires was an improperly repaired thermal fuse in the heating and ventilation system, potentially affecting around 234,938 vehicles.

Despite many being swallowed up over the years, a 2.3 percent share of scrappage puts the Vauxhall passenger car in the list of the 10 most broken engines of 2024.

6. Renault Clio

The Renault Clio was the sixth most scrapped car last year, but Renault as a brand was the fifth most scrapped car - one place higher than last year

The Renault Clio was the sixth most scrapped car last year.

The French supermini was responsible for 2.5 percent of the demolitions, the same as the fifth-place car.

In total, Renault accounted for 5.9 percent of all scrapped cars, placing it fifth in the car manufacturer rankings.

Renault has seen a steady rise in the manufacturer’s scrappage cost charts, from sixth to fifth place in the past twelve months. This is a trend that could continue in the coming years, according to Scrap Car Comparison.

5. Volkswagen Golf

The Golf was the fifth most wrecked car. That’s no surprise given its enormous popularity

The top five most scrapped cars of 2024 are rounded out with the Volkswagen Golf.

The evergreen family hatchback contributed 2.5 percent of all cars that ended up on the scrap heap last year.

In fifth place, the Golf completes a top performance that has remained very consistent in recent years.

Just like the Ford Focus, the Golf and the rest of the top five, all variants of this sturdy car brand were sold in large numbers between 2000 and 2010.

4. Ford Fiesta

Ford's second entry into the top five - this time the Fiesta. The hatchback was the fourth most scrapped car in 2024

Ford’s second entry into the top five – this time the Fiesta. The hatchback was the fourth most scrapped car in 2024

The first entry into Ford’s top five is the Fiesta.

About 4.4 percent of all scrapped cars were Fiestas, contributing to Ford being the second most scrapped car brand last year.

With Ford ceasing production of this much-loved model – which remains Britain’s best-selling car on the road – in June 2023, the number of used models will begin to decline.

As a result, the percentage of scrapped Fiestas could decrease slightly in the coming years.

3. Opel Corsa

Combine the Vauxhall Corsa’s 4.8% scrap rate with the Astra and it’s clear why Vauxhall was the most scrapped car brand of 2024

The Vauxhall Corsa supermini came in just ahead of its closest rival and was the third most wrecked car last year.

Of all car models that were scrapped, the Corsa made up 4.8 percent of the total that ended up in the heap.

In total, 17.8 percent of all cars scrapped between January and December were Opels, the comparison website claimed.

As a result, the affordable British brand put Ford as the most scrapped car manufacturer.

2. Opel Astra

With 5.6% of all cars scrapped last year were Opel Astras, making them the second most frequently sent to the scrap heap

For the second year running, the Vauxhall Astra is the second most scrapped car in Britain.

According to Scrap Car Comparison’s own data, the Astra accounted for 5.6 percent of all scrapped cars.

The brand, now owned by Stellantis, is the most scrapped car brand of all before 2024.

1. Ford Focus

For the eight consecutive years in a row, the Ford Focus is the most scrapped car of the year according to Scrap Car Comparison’s own scrappage data

Scrap Car Comparison’s processing of car makes and models between January and December 2024 found that the Ford Focus was the most scrapped car of the year.

It accounted for 6.3 percent of all cars scrapped in 2024 and was the most scrapped car for the eighth year in a row.

There may be a good reason for that, though: after its debut in 1998, the Focus topped the bestseller list for much of the 2000s, and hundreds of thousands of Focuses will now reach the end of their lives twenty years later.
