Republicans warn Trump must move fast on Greenland acquisition… or else risk the Chinese taking over
Republican lawmakers are urging Donald Trump to quickly annex Greenland to the United States, especially now that China has its eyes on the island.
In recent days, Trump has stepped up calls for the US to buy or organize the “strategically located” country of Denmark.
Greenland is one of the shortest oceanic crossing points between North America and Europe and has incredible military and economic value to both the US and China.
On Tuesday, the president-elect’s eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., visited the island along with MAGA allies who flew in on Trump Force One.
Then Jr. landed, Trump made it clear that the visit was intended to gain momentum for his efforts to Americanize the island.
“This is a deal that has to happen,” Trump wrote on Truth Social alongside a video of Don Jr.’s landing. on the island. ‘Make GREENLAND GREAT AGAIN!’
And Republican lawmakers not only agree, but they’re telling Trump to hurry up so China can’t get its hands on the country first.
“I think it’s a great move for the Trump team to try to make as many friends as possible because if we don’t, the Chinese will,” Rep. Tim Burchett, R-Tenn., told DailyMail .com from Jr. visit.
The country is also important because it has a large supply of rare earth minerals, such as uranium, that are not found in the US, Burchett added.

Newly elected US President Donald Trump arrives to speak with members of the media during a press conference at Mar-a-Lago Club on January 7, 2025 in Palm Beach, Florida. At the event, he said Greenland was needed by the US for ‘national security purposes’
Speaking at Mar-a-Lago on Tuesday, Trump told reporters that the US needs Greenland for “national security purposes.”
The president-elect also refused to rule out the use of military or economic force to get Greenland to comply with his demands.
In a notable moment, a reporter asked Trump on Tuesday whether he could assure that he would not use “military or economic coercion” to take control of the Panama Canal and Greenland.
“I’m not going to commit to that,” Trump said, when asked whether he would rule out deploying the military. ‘You may have to do something. The Panama Canal is of vital importance to our country.’ He added: “We need Greenland for national security purposes.”
He has stepped up threats to take over Greenland, the Panama Canal and also Canada as he prepares for his second term.
Greenland is home to the US Thule Air Base, which is critical to security in the Arctic. The base has a wide range of capabilities, such as missile defense, satellite tracking systems and more.
It is also a key location in China’s ‘Polar Silk Road’, a plan to expand their economic influence with countries in the area. Chinese stakeholders currently hold major claims on Greenland’s large rare earth deposit ‘Kvanefjeld’, which contains vast reserves of uranium.
“The idea of Greenland: There are a lot of mineral resources there,” House Homeland Security Chairman Mark Green told DailyMail.com. “I mean, working something out with the Danes, I don’t know, I mean, I didn’t follow that conversation very closely.”

Both Reps. Mark Green and Tim Burchett expressed support for Trump’s Greenland plans, noting how the country has vast reserves of rare metals
“But I mean I’m not against it,” he admitted.
“I support the president, we have to put America first,” freshman Rep. Addison McDowell, 30, told DailyMail.com when asked if he supports Trump’s Greenland plans.
“And anyway, we have to do that, we have to do that, but we have to put America first again,” he continued.
Rep. Troy Nehls, R-Texas, said he also supports Trump’s plans, noting that the president-elect “is a great negotiator” and that “Don Jr.” is above that.’
‘What is best for Greenland? How do they want to do it? Denmark is involved. Let’s see what happens,” he added.
During Don Jr.’s visit he put his father on loudspeaker with residents of a restaurant to convince them why they should join the US.
“You are so strategically located,” Trump told those dining out at lunch, as his son put him on speaker phone.
Republicans argued that Greenland would be a huge asset for the US because it would allow Washington to provide greater security to the island and the region as a whole.

Still, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen reiterated that Greenland is not for sale on Tuesday.
She said Greenland’s Prime Minister Múte Egede has “been very, very clear” that they have no intention of becoming part of the US.
“There is a lot of support among the people of Greenland that Greenland is not for sale and will not be for sale in the future,” Frederiksen emphasized.
But she is not the only leader who has had to reject Trump’s offer to expand the American empire.
“There is no chance of Canada becoming part of the United States,” Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau wrote on X on Tuesday.
Trump has repeatedly joked, at least until recently it seemed like a joke, that Canada should become the 51st state of the US, a claim he made to the prime minister’s face at a post-election Mar-a-Lago dinner .
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau speaks during a press conference at Rideau Cottage in Ottawa, Canada on January 6, 2025. Trudeau announced his resignation and said he would leave office once the ruling Liberal Party elects a new leader.
The president-elect has also referred to Trudeau as “governor.” But now, days after announcing he will resign, the Canadian leader says enough is enough.
“Workers and communities in both our countries benefit from being each other’s largest trading and security partners,” the Prime Minister continued.
But the loss of trade with the US could send the Canadian economy into a tailspin, and that’s why Trudeau rushed to Mar-a-Lago when Trump made comments in November about imposing high tariffs on the country.
“I said, listen, what would happen if we didn’t subsidize you? Because we give them a lot of money, we help them,” Trump said of Canada on Tuesday.
‘For example, we buy icebreakers, and Canada wants to buy icebreakers with us. I said, you know, we don’t really want to have a partner in purchasing icebreakers. We don’t need a partner.’
“We have the right not to help them with their financial problems,” Trump continued.
“Why are we supporting a country with $200 billion plus a year of having our military at their disposal, and all this other stuff. They should be a state,” he said.
