Mo Salah sends eight-word message to Jamie Carragher after the Liverpool legend aimed another dig at the Egyptian and Trent Alexander-Arnold amid their contract sagas

Mohamed Salah has scored a goal at Jamie Carragher amid continued uncertainty over his future at Liverpool.

Salah, 32, is one of the Reds’ best players of all time. The Egyptian has scored an impressive 232 goals in 376 appearances for the club since joining from Roma in 2017 for an initial fee of £36.5 million.

The forward has won eight trophies at Anfield and remains an integral part of Arne Slot’s side, who continue to impress so far this season.

However, Salah’s contract expires in the summer and the Egyptian is yet to renew his deal, with speculation over his future currently a major talking point, with the striker regularly giving cryptic answers when questioned about his future.

Earlier on Monday, Salah even shared a photo of himself and Trent Alexander-Arnold discussing a free-kick during Sunday’s match, while Virgil van Dijk can be seen in the background.

All three stars are out of contract at the end of the season and progress still needs to be made regarding their futures. Alexander-Arnold was even the subject of a £20million bid from Real Madrid last week.

The attacker did not accompany the image with a caption, adding to the intrigue.

And former Liverpool favorite Carragher was asked for his thoughts on the post.

“Ooh, I don’t know,” he told Sky Sports News. “You know what I’d say. I would say that Virgil van Dijk has come out of this whole situation with a higher rating this season as captain of the club.

‘In the way he behaves, in the way he performs on the pitch. In the way he led the team.

“Like he was yesterday and he’s not involved too much. It’s clearly a very important time for all three players.

‘But I think instead of talking about Trent Alexander-Arnold or Mo Salah, I’d probably like to pay tribute to Virgil van Dijk.

‘I think he comes across as a true statesman. I think about the way he handles it. He’s been asked questions and he hasn’t gone away, he’s here to win the league and he’s doing his best for Liverpool. And fingers crossed he signs.

“But I think maybe the other two could look at Virgil van Dijk and take a leaf out of his book.”

Salah quickly responded to the clip circulating on social media as the Egyptian shared the video, before adding the caption: “I’m starting to think you’re obsessed with me,” accompanied by a winking face.

However, Carragher responded cheerfully to Salah as he quickly sent a message back.

He said: ‘I’ve always been obsessed with you @MoSalah. Hopefully that obsession will continue next season, with the former defender adding a crossed fingers emoji and a wink.

Salah has repeatedly hinted in recent months that this season could be his last at Anfield, although the club and player are keen to agree new terms. Mail Sport reported last month how the Reds have offered him a contract.

In an interview with Sky Sports on Friday, Salah even declared that ‘this is my last year’ at Liverpool as he outlined his intention to leave with the Premier League title.

Carragher and Salah’s swipe at each other is not the first time the pair have clashed during the contract saga.

In November, Salah shocked the football world when he publicly called out the club for no progress in offering a new contract.

The attacker conducted a rare interview with Mailsport and a small group of other reporters after he scored twice in the 3-2 win over Southampton, where he said he was ‘more out than in’.

Salah addressed the impasse over his contract, saying: ‘We are almost in December and I have not yet received any offers to stay at the club.

‘I’m probably outside more than inside. You know I’ve been at the club for years.

‘There is no such club. But ultimately it’s out of my hands. Like I said, it’s December and I haven’t received anything about my future yet.

‘I love the fans. The fans love me. Ultimately it is not in my hands, nor in the hands of the fans.’

However, Carragher took umbrage at these comments and branded the Egyptian as ‘selfish’ for his comments.

Carragher had said: ‘Of course there have been discussions. At the moment there is clearly a big difference in valuation, how Salah and his agent value themselves, in terms of contract length, and how Liverpool do.

‘The reason Liverpool haven’t offered a contract yet is because Mo Salah will reject it. They are still talking, I would like them to meet halfway.

‘But I have to say that I am very disappointed in Mo Salah. That interview last night… Liverpool have Real Madrid during the week and Manchester City next weekend. That’s the story for Liverpool at the moment.

“And Mo Salah, we are aware – especially the local reporters at the club – that he has been put in the mixed zone twice in seven years. That’s absolutely fine.

‘But he retires for the third time at Southampton because he won Liverpool the game and played it out.

“If he continues to comment or his agent continues to spread cryptic tweets, that is selfish. That is thinking about oneself and not about the football club.’

That wasn’t the end of their war of words, as Salah then hit back at Carragher as he collected the Player of the Match award after their 2-0 win over Man City in what was the first Premier League match following his comments at Southampton .

“So who picked him?” Van Dijk – who was standing next to Salah – had asked the post-match interviewer after revealing the news that the Egyptian had won the award.

The reporter told the duo that it was Marcel with Van Dijk and then said he was surprised Carragher had not given it to Salah.

“I wouldn’t be,” Salah replied. ‘Never. He would never give it to me.’

Carragher was then asked about the comment from presenter Dave Jones, who said: ‘Mo Salah throws down the gauntlet, Jamie?’

Carragher jokingly replied: ‘I see him in the car park’, poking fun at the incident between Roy Keane and a fan in Ipswich in November.
