Awards season is in full swing and like clockwork, the 2025 Golden Globes have kicked off the festivities by recognizing the best films of 2024. But of all the acting nominations, Demi Moore’s win is for her performance in Coralie Fargeat’s The fabric (one of the best horror films on streaming) was by far one of the most memorable moments of the evening – marking Moore’s first-ever major awards show and a monumental recognition for horror films.
Taking home the award for Best Actress in a Musical/Comedy (although I feel like this is inaccurately described). The fabric), Moore followed up her Golden Globe win with a powerful speech that shed light on her experiences with not being taken seriously as an actress. Moore opened her speech confessing that “this is the first time (I) have won anything as an actor” in her incredible 45-year career, which was a surprising discovery considering Moore was named the highest-paid actress of the years ’90.
But Moore’s moving speech didn’t stop there. She added: “Thirty years ago I had a producer tell me I was a popcorn actress and at the time I meant that (awards) wasn’t something I could get, that I could make films that were successful, that a lot of money but that I could not be recognised.”
As she signed off on her speech, Moore concluded: “In those moments when we think we’re not smart enough or pretty enough or skinny enough or successful enough or really just not enough, I had a woman say to me, ‘know that you you’ll never do that’. is sufficient, but you can know the measure of your work if you simply lay down the yardstick.”

There’s no hiding the fact that horror is ignored as a legitimate genre and shunned by the biggest awards shows, and yes, I’m still bitter about Toni Collette and Lupita Nyong’o’s Oscar nods for Heir (2018) and Us (2019). But alas, every cloud has a silver lining, and so it is The fabric.
While I enjoy the campy and sometimes unserious nature of horror, I find that these can be detrimental characteristics that can damage the artistic credibility of the genre. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t get a damn good story out of a horror movie. When it comes down to it The fabricFargeat’s screenplay strikes a perfect balance between seriousness and camp, yet still manages to provide a story that critiques the harsh realities older women face in the entertainment industry.
As a fan of both horror and compelling women’s stories, Demi Moore’s win at the 2025 Golden Globes is a comforting reminder that horror has significant credibility and could serve as a catalyst for her campaign for the Best Actress Oscar. The Golden Globes are an indication of who can score a big win at the Oscars, so it’s safe to say I can’t wait to see how this race will play out.
