Ruben Amorim writes OFF Man United’s chances of qualifying for Europe via the Premier League – as head coach admits he has ‘no idea’ when they will improve after overseeing another defeat at Wolves

Ruben Amorim stressed that Manchester United must enter survival mode after a fourth defeat in five Premier League games.

United were stunned at Molineux by a resurgent Wolves who struck twice in the second half to make it two wins from two, with Matheus Cunha and Hwang Hee-chan on target.

However, it was a humiliating defeat for the visitors, who have now lost each of their last three matches and conceded nine goals, as the Amorim era faces its first stumbling block on the road to recovery.

Asked whether his side had to worry about teams below them, with United in 14th place in the Premier League and just seven points clear, Amorim said: “Yes, at the moment we just have to survive and win sometimes .’

Amorim, who has now lost five of his 10 games in all competitions as United boss, added that United should forget about qualifying for European football next season.

“No, no, no, no,” he said when asked if United could be thinking about Europe. ‘We have to work on many things at our club, both on and off the field.’

Perhaps even more alarming for United fans, Amorim said he has ‘no idea’ how long it will take for his side to improve.

‘I have no idea. No idea,” Amorim said. ‘Instead of me trying to understand how much time it will take, it’s just day by day about improving, trying to watch videos and using every minute of training and trying to win some points because it’s very important at the moment .

‘The idea takes time. This will be a difficult moment. We are far from the end of this moment and that is all. We have to keep going and focus on the next game.”

With the score still at 0-0, United started the second half about as poorly as they had hoped.

United skipper Bruno Fernandes was sent off in the 47th minute for a second yellow card and for the second time in three games, Amorim’s side conceded directly from a corner.

Cunha’s inswinging delivery beat Andre Onana, who slid in under the crossbar, before Hwang wrapped up the game for Wolves in stoppage time, returning across goal to seal three huge points for the hosts.

Vitor Pereira, who has now won his first two games in charge of Wolves since Gary O’Neil was sacked, revealed the corner was something Cunha had been working on in training.

“He (Cunha) is a top player,” Pereira said. ‘He is a special player who can do things that can make a difference in the small details. We tried to exploit this inswinging angle. These things can happen with players like this.”

The attacker himself added: ‘I feel so happy. We didn’t start the season well, we come together, we suffer together and we score together.

‘You see how happy the fans are. He is [Pereira] I come here with a lot of energy and he said it was his dream to come here and manage a team in the Premier League, and you can see the energy.

‘We train a lot on it, we try to manage the goalkeeper and we have done so well and I am so happy. In the first half I did one and it was saved and in the second half I got a bit lucky.

‘Channy says to me every day: “give it to me and I’ll score” and I’m so happy because I had the chance to pass to him and he scored.’

As Amorim leaves Molineux and reflects on how his side can improve when they play Newcastle on Monday, his counterpart Pereira admitted it was ‘special’ to win his first game in his new home.

‘It is a fantastic and special feeling. We can see that the players are willing to suffer and fight for each other.’
