Wife reveals she ‘canceled Christmas’ because her husband bought his gaming buddy a pricey gift instead of her

A woman has revealed she canceled Christmas after her husband bought his gaming buddy an expensive gift instead of her.

The unnamed 28-year-old woman took to Reddit to explain the situation.

In a thread titled ‘Am I the hole?‘, she begged people on the internet for advice as she revealed that her husband had decided to buy an expensive gift for his friend who plays video games.

She noted that her partner spent as much as $150 on the friend but only bought her a $20 candle.

The woman explained that her husband bought her for their family Secret Santa, who had a budget of $100, but instead he spent his money on his online friend.

When she heard that her husband had not paid any attention to her gift, she became furious and decided to cancel the Christmas dinner with the family.

Now her loved ones are chiding her for overreacting and have branded her “petty.”

She wondered if she was wrong in a post captioned: “Am I the asshole for canceling Christmas dinner because my husband’s ‘Secret Santa’ gift was for his gaming buddy and not for me?”

“I’m currently hiding in our bedroom with a bottle of wine while my husband plays video games in the living room and probably tells his online friends how I ‘ruined Christmas,'” she wrote.

‘My phone is full of texts from his mother, calling me selfish, and I’m wondering if I should just block her until New Year’s. Let me explain what led to this festive meltdown.

‘For context, I (28F) have been married to my husband (30M) for three years and we host a Christmas dinner for his family every year.

‘This year I did everything I could: decorate the house, plan a great menu and even hand-make some table decorations.

‘Meanwhile, my husband has been “too busy” with his work (read: his online gaming) to be able to help with anything.

“A few weeks ago we decided to exchange a Secret Santa gift with his family, which included a $100 budget.

“My husband was assigned to me, which I thought was sweet because he could easily get me something thoughtful without needing any hints from anyone else.

“I, on the other hand, have his father and spent weeks looking for the perfect vintage vinyl record he was looking for.”

Her excitement quickly turned to anger after she discovered that her husband wasn’t spending as much money on her as his friend.

She said, “Fast forward to today. After spending all morning in the kitchen preparing Christmas dinner, I decided to take a look at the presents under the tree.

‘Then I saw a box with my husband’s handwriting, addressed to someone called ‘The Warlord’.

“Confused, I opened it (yes, I snooped – sue me), and inside was a $150 custom gaming headset.

“For context, my husband has a gaming buddy he plays with almost every night who goes by the name “The Warlord.”

‘At first I thought he might have gotten an extra gift for his friend. But then it dawned on me: he spent more on a gift for his gaming buddy than on me, his wife.

“I checked the gift he got me, and it was a $20 candle – yes, a candle – with the generic message: ‘Merry Christmas! [husband’s name].”

‘I’m not even a candle person. I confronted him immediately. He laughed and said, “It’s just Secret Santa, no problem. Plus, The Warlord and I have been gaming together for years. You wouldn’t understand.”

‘No apology, no explanation – just excuses about how I’m ‘overreacting’ and ‘ruining the holiday spirit.’

At the end of the post, she wonders if she was wrong, writing, “At that point, I had had enough.

‘I walked back to the kitchen, packed up the food and told him that Christmas dinner was cancelled.

“His mother and sister started blowing up my phone and accused me of being petty, but honestly I don’t even care.

“I’m not about to serve dinner to a man who thinks his online buddy deserves more trouble than his wife.

“So here I am, drinking wine in my pajamas, while the ham I spent hours glazing sits untouched in the refrigerator.

‘AITA for canceling Christmas dinner and making a point? Or should I have just sucked it up and let the Warlord win this one?’

One person said: ‘Not the hole, I’m not getting a divorce. But you should definitely take a step back and evaluate whether he’s putting the same amount of effort into everything that has to do with you.

“$20? It’s the thought that counts, but I guarantee he didn’t look at the candle and say, “Yes, that’s my wife.”

‘NTA for canceling the dinner. You’re obviously hurt because none of your efforts are being reciprocated, and you feel a certain way, but what are you going to do now?’ someone else asked.

“That’s the big question because your husband sounds like a disrespectful child and I wouldn’t want to live my life like that.”

Another user commented, “NTA. Eat Christmas dinner yourself.’
