Ruben Amorim has revealed that Marcus Rashford wants to return to Manchester United and that it is his decision to leave out the troubled star, saying: ‘I know what I’m doing.’

Rashford has missed the last three games and cast doubt on his future at Old Trafford by claiming in an interview that he is ready for a new challenge after 20 years at United.

However, Amorim has clarified the situation by confirming that Rashford is keen to play again but will not be recalled until he is up to par in training.

“Yes, it’s my decision,” Amorim insisted. ‘He wants to play. He tries. It’s my decision, my decision alone.

‘(There is) no situation. If I feel this is the right time, I will make a change. Until then, I will continue to think about what is best for the team.

“I’ve spoken to a lot of players individually during training, so I try to do things my way, and that’s the only way I know. If I don’t, I will lose myself, and I won’t lose myself. I know what I’m doing.’

Despite questioning the influence of Rashford’s camp in his decision to speak out in the interview, Amorim denies the issue has become a distraction.

“No, I don’t think so,” he added. ‘Not for me and not for the other players, because everyone is there every day during training. They understand. That’s the most important point.

“I’m very focused and they know – I’m so clear in my message – everyone in Carrington knows what I’m talking about and what I want from Marcus and everyone else.

‘So it’s not a distraction for us. Maybe it’s for the media, but that’s not my concern. For the media and for other people, I have no control over that.’

Asked if he has spoken to Rashford and what he should see from the player in training, Amorim replied: “Just like any other player, the best he can be.

“If you have great talents, great achievements, great responsibility and great commitment, then push everyone forward right now. And some guys have a big responsibility here because they’ve been here a long time.

‘This is perhaps one of the lowest moments in our club. So we have to face it and be strong at this time. That’s what I wish for every player on the team.

‘I talk to him every day, not about the interview but about the performance.’

Amorim has left the door open for Rashford to return to Wolves on Boxing Day but has given no guarantee he will be brought in from the cold.
