Italian football fans gave the fascist salute after Benito Mussolini’s great-grandson scored his first professional goal.

Romano Floriani Mussolini, who is on loan at Serie B club Juve Stabia from Lazio, scored the only goal of the match in a 1-0 win over Cesena.

After scoring, Mussolini put his finger to his lips, but the fans responded by chanting his name and performing the Roman salute.

The gesture, in which the right arm is extended straight with the palm facing down, is associated with fascism and was often performed by Benito Mussolini.

Benito Mussolini, founder and leader of the National Fascist Party, was Prime Minister of Italy from 1922 to 1943.

As a youth player, Romano Floriani Mussolini spent time in Roma’s youth academy before joining Lazio in 2016.

So far this season he has played eighteen games in Serie B for Juve Stabia.

The 21-year-old, who plays as a right back or right full-back, is the third child of Mauro Floriani and politician Alesssandra Mussolini.

His grandfather Romano Mussolini was a pianist, while actress Sophia Loren was his great-aunt.
