Saturday’s deadline is approaching to apply for pension credits and get a winter fuel payment

Older people on low incomes have until next Saturday to submit a pension credit application and receive a winter fuel payment worth up to £300.

Up to 880,000 people could miss out on more than £3,900 a year from the benefit that allows low-income pensioners to claim costs including fuel and housing.

Only those who successfully claim before the qualifying week of September 16 to 22 will receive payment, but claims can be made backdated for up to three months.

Pensioners will no longer receive the winter fuel payment automatically following Chancellor Rachel Reeves’ controversial decision to means-test the benefit earlier this year.

You can check whether you may be eligible by using the online calculator (gov.uk/pension-credit-calculator) or by calling 0800 99 1234.
