90s star Gabrielle slams Olly Alexander for taking part in Eurovision due to his previous singing and acting experience: ‘Why did he even bother?’

Gabrielle brutally criticized Olly Alexander for his entry into the Eurovision Song Contest due to his previous singing and acting experience on Monday.

The ’90s singer, 54, questioned why the Years and Years singer ‘even bothered’ to enter the competition, claiming Olly, 33, should have passed the baton to new talent.

Olly, who finished in 18th place on Saturday evening, represented the UK in Malmö, Sweden with his raunchy track Dizzy.

Gabrielle spoke to Ed Balls and Susanna Reid on Good Morning Britain and didn’t hold back her views.

She said: ‘Olly is incredible, an incredible artist and he’s an actor too, so I think, ‘Why did you bother? Why don’t you give it to other people?

The ’90s singer questioned why the Years and Years singer ‘even bothered’ to enter the competition, claiming Olly should have passed the baton to new talent.

‘Obviously he probably wanted to represent our country, but I personally think he should have, but he’s incredible and I love him.

‘This was just one fault, who knows, maybe he just had a sore throat that day. I don’t know what happened, I don’t even think it was his throat. I just don’t think they give us many points. Whatever the reason, it wasn’t his fault, okay.”

Olly put on a brave face as he was spotted for the first time since his lackluster performance at the Eurovision Song Contest.

Although things seemed to be looking positive after the jury vote of 46, he unfortunately received an unfathomable no from the audience.

On Sunday morning, Olly smiled as he emerged from his hotel in central Malmö around 11am local time, refusing to speak to waiting media as he boarded a bus to head to the airport.

He later took to Instagram on Sunday afternoon to extend friendly congratulations to Swiss winner Nemo, speaking publicly for the first time since the disastrous show.

Olly shared a photo of Nemo and exaggeratedly wrote: ‘Nemo! You did it! I am so proud of you. It was an honor to be on this journey with you. You broke the code!’

Despite his difficult evening a few hours earlier, Olly still stopped to pose with an admiring passerby before leaving Sweden.

The fan told MailOnline: ‘We wanted to support the artist who didn’t get any points from the audience, because if you ask me that’s quite an achievement…

“I didn’t think the song was that bad, but it’s something that millions of people across Europe didn’t think was worth even one point.”

However, Olly’s father David Thornton jumped to his son’s defense as he shared his shock that the song fell flat with voters.

On Saturday night after the gig, David told the BBC: ‘I’ve loved every minute of it.

“For me it’s a real surprise that the audience had no connection with that song, even though the juries gave it a very good score.”

Switzerland’s Nemo stormed to an unassailable victory after the non-binary singer scored 365 points from the judges and 226 points from the public for a total of 591, overtaking the score of 547 from Croatian entry Baby Lasagna.

After Britain’s public vote of zero points came to light, a slew of Brits took to Twitter to share their heartbreak and insist the star ‘deserved better’ – in what some saw as a career-ruining moment for the singer and actor.

His performance was surrounded by whispers of sabotage, including claims that his sound was failing, his singing was weak and that final dress rehearsals were cancelled.

After the show, heartbroken fans wrote: ‘No reason why Olly Alexander got 0? you all deserved better’; ‘Zero public points for Britain – my jaw dropped #Eurovision2024’

‘Really feel sorry for Olly Alexander, to get zero public votes for the Eurovision Song Contest is really tough! Everyone hates Britain! I think now it’s no longer about music, it’s about politics. Congratulations to Switzerland’.

However, Olly and his team appeared to take the news in stride as they were pictured laughing and cheering after the news was announced.

The star didn’t look disappointed as he celebrated with his dancers after the packed performance.

Other disappointed fans wrote: ‘Olly Alexander deserved so much better than that’; ‘Olly Alexander, one of Britain’s best artists, received 0 public votes…. I never would have predicted that.”

‘I can’t believe #OllyAlexander got zero points in the public vote. Quite mean!!’ ; ‘UK gets zero points in the public vote. I think leaving the EU has triggered the continent more than expected.”
