- Police briefly cordoned off the North Tower memorial after the incident
Police launched an investigation after a person jumped into the 9/11 North Tower Memorial.
The person survived the jump and dove into the 45-foot reflecting pool, which was briefly cordoned off, according to the New York Times.
Officials told the Times that the jumper was a family member of a 9/11 victim who was “briefly granted access to the restricted area on the plaza level.”
They looked at their loved one’s name on the memorial, with the area reopening a short time later.
Safety officials reportedly told the Times that the family member survived the jump into the 18-inch-deep water and complained of back pain.
