78 Degrees Distillery recalls its specialty wines over life-threatening allergy fears: South Australian company pulls its vermouth from Dan Murphy’s shelves
- Special wine recalled
- Fear of life-threatening allergy
- Product is labeled incorrectly
An urgent recall has been issued for batches of a popular drink made by a South Australian wine producer over fears of a life-threatening allergy in the wine.
Three types of wine flavored with herbs and spices made by Adelaide-based 78 Degrees Distillery contain the toxic and undeclared substance sulphite.
The wine has been sold at bottle shop Dan Murphy’s in New South Wales, South Australia and Victoria.
An urgent recall
The product has also been sold in liquor stores across the country, including the BWS store in South Australia.
The Food Standards Australia and New Zealand warning issued Wednesday said bottles of three-batch dry, rosso and rose vermouths made at the distillery had been affected.
Sulfites are common in many foods, especially wine, but according to health experts, it can trigger asthma attacks and potentially life-threatening anaphylactic reactions.
The batch codes of the affected wines are: 22060 (Dry, Rosso, Rose), 22244 (Rosso), 22333 (Dry, Rosso, Rose).
Consumers with an allergy or intolerance to sulfites should not consume this product and should return the products to the place of purchase for a full refund.
More to come.
