75% of adults don’t know how to recycle electronics – here are the 3 best ways to use technology responsibly
It appears the e-waste problem is more widespread and damaging than we thought – even bigger than Windows 10’s end of service – as several reports show the problem at a wider scope.
A new study of CNET found that as many as 75% of adults either have no plan for disposing of old appliances or have only a vague but not definitive plan.
This supports a new report from the UN It states that e-waste is increasing, with devices being thrown away five times as quickly as recycled. As a result, manufacturers have been pressured to make products that last longer and are more accessible in terms of repairs (often known as Right-to-Repair), and to build devices with recycled materials.
However, once your device is completely unusable, it should be disposed of properly. While there are several ways to do this, only a few can be considered the best options that will have the least impact on the environment.
Sell or trade in your used devices
Most phone companies and manufacturers offer promotions that allow you to sell or trade in older phones for cash or credit toward a new device. Not only is this a great way to get rid of unwanted technology, but this technology will then be repaired and sold by the company as refurbished or recycled.
It also has the advantage that the device is disposed of properly and does not contribute to toxic waste disposal, which is still a widespread problem of electronic waste.
Use a recycling service
Both internal recycling services and external recycling services will take care of your old devices, either via a delivery or collection service. Some of them even offer bulk services if you have a large quantity that needs to be recycled.
Not only is recycling much better for the environment, but those parts can also be used to create new things, whether it’s technology or something completely different.
Donate them to others/a good cause
While you may no longer be able to use your old technology, someone might be able to do something about it. That is why donating to people you know or to charities is also a good option.
Many people cannot afford the technology they need to function in the modern world, and donating to them will significantly extend the life of a device, especially if you repair the item beforehand.
