70,000 pieces of outdoor furniture recalled in US after customers have fingers amputated

A luxury garden furniture brand has recalled patio loungers after reports they can injure fingers so badly they may need to be amputated.

Frontgate last week launched a recall for 70,000 Newport aluminum and teak chaise longues.

“When you adjust the seatback while seated, the adjustable seatback may unexpectedly drop violently, posing a risk of finger entrapment and amputation,” according to the recall notice sent to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Frontgate received three reports of customer fingers becoming trapped between the $1,400 seat frame and the backrest, two of which resulted in partial finger amputations and the other also required surgery.

The seats involved in the recall were sold at Frontgate stores in Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio and Texas.

They were also available for purchase through the store’s website and in its catalogs from February 2014 through December 2023.

The chairs were available in five different colors: architectural bronze, champagne silver, cobalt, matte black and matte white.

They were sold in sets of two in ‘weathered’ or ‘natural’ finishes.

The sunbeds are 130 cm long and 79 cm wide, have a powder-coated aluminum or teak frame and an adjustable mesh backrest.

In January, more than half a million beds sold at Walmart and other popular retailers were recalled due to reports of injuries.

The problematic bed frames were sold at stores including Walmart and Wayfair between July 2018 and November 2023.

The recall was announced on January 18 after 128 people reported the bed had collapsed and 36 people were injured.
